CC Experience at KeyArena

I know it's not OC, but I just wanted to report back about a CC experience since it seems like some people have had issues with it here. I was out with friends and we were visiting places that were not OC friendly, and I didn't feel like dealing with the hassling so I decided to cover up. I had talked to SPD last time I was there to find out the rules. Every staffer I had asked had no clue that they checked firearms. At the front entrance you just show the ticket guy your conceal permit. He will call an SPD officer over. This is where it gets fun. I was escorted back to the security office by 2 officers. You fill out a form in there book with the info and then you place your firearm into the locker. You lock it and take the key. At no point did they look at the firearm, ask to see it, etc. They weren't even looking at me when I drew it and placed it in the lock box. On the form it says to call a number and SPD will escort you back. I asked the officer if this was accurate. He told me to try and find them after the show. If I couldn't just go back to the security office. So of course I couldn't find them afterwards, so I went straight to the office. I claimed my firearm as well as taking the login slip like it says. I then ask the guy in the security booth if I need to leave via the side entrance or through the front door. He tells me I can leave eitherway. To me that seems a little odd. I need to be escorted back to check it, but I can wander the facility afterwards while everyone is streaming out with no problem? To me that kinda says the check-in has nothing to do with safety or security, and more to be a deterrent to carrying firearms. Either way I'm glad it went smooth with no hassle at all. Just thought I'd share.

RCW 9.41.300
(2) Cities, towns, counties, and other municipalities may enact laws and ordinances:

(a) Restricting the discharge of firearms in any portion of their respective jurisdictions where there is a reasonable likelihood that humans, domestic animals, or property will be jeopardized. Such laws and ordinances shall not abridge the right of the individual guaranteed by Article I, section 24 of the state Constitution to bear arms in defense of self or others; and

(b) Restricting the possession of firearms in any stadium or convention center, operated by a city, town, county, or other municipality, except that such restrictions shall not apply to:

(i) Any pistol in the possession of a person licensed under RCW 9.41.070 or exempt from the licensing requirement by RCW 9.41.060; or

(ii) Any showing, demonstration, or lecture involving the exhibition of firearms.

As has been discussed in here several times, it may depend on the event. If the promoter of an event is a private party they may be able to restrict firearm possession at "their" event. In that case, it is not the public entity doing the restricting so there is no violation of preemption. I'm not saying they should be allowed to do this, just that they may be operating that way and I don't know if it has ever been challenged. It would be interesting to know if the city or the public facilities district has a policy that requires event promoter to restrict firearms. If they do, I think that would violate preemption as a back door way around the law. Frankly, since we are talking about Seattle, I wouldn't put it past them to do something like that. I'm getting to the point where I don't want to admit I was born there.

Actually, this is exactly how it works....last year, I went to a concert (private venue) and they had signs up prohibiting firearms....I was cc, no metal detectors, no pat down... spoke directly with the supervisor (Lt.) and he explained the procedure as above. Was actually pretty gun friendly, just following the procedures....

I think Lammo is correct, that the city has incorporated this into their leasing policy as a back door....this has been hashed before. There must be a link somewhere....

Guests, including law enforcement personnel not present in an official capacity, are prohibited from bringing weapons into the arena. KeyArena does provide weapon lockers. See any KeyArena Admissions staff member to check your weapon. Weapons include, but are not limited to, the following: firearms, explosives, stun guns, handcuffs, brass knuckles, sticks, clubs, batons, martial arts instruments, pepper spray, tear gas, knives, etc. Guests found in possession of the above-mentioned items will be asked to remove the item from the arena or dispose of it. Guests who refuse to comply will be ejected from the arena and may be subject to arrest.

If you are subject to arrest that suggests that you are violating a law, not a policy by the leaseholder. You cannot be arrested in Washington state for carrying a firearm, even in a private business. You can only be trespassed. You can only be arrested if you then refuse to leave or return in violation of the trespass order. This would suggest that there is, in fact, a city ordinance or rule concerning this subject.

You'd be arrested for trespassing & refusing to leave, not having a weapon.

At sporting events; Safeco, Key, Century Link, Husky Stadium, The Rose Garden, etc... I prefer to CC as it is legal. No reason to ask permission, no reason to ask to check my firearm.

And when there are 'searches', 'patdowns', or 'wanding' by private security, I have entered using a few different techniques. Apple Cup at CLink, private security using NFL rules.... Walther PPK goes into the inner collar of my jacket. I approach the 'pat down' with my arms extended outwards and am lightly patted down. Enter the building and proceed to the restroom to find a stall to re holster my PPK and enjoy the game.

Thanks for all of the insight guys. So it pretty well sounds like the name of the game is don't get caught, and if you do just leave. Otherwise there is no need to check firearms. Obviously if you were OC then you would need to. I really need to get something smaller to conceal.
