I just ran across this while looking for something else and I couldn't pass up posting it.

Port Jervis, Deerpark election district 3, Orange Co, NY, 3 April 1865

Daniel Maher, 45, from Ireland, "shot dead by a woman (English)" (sic),

yep, direct quote as written in the 1865 NY State agricultural census, in the "deaths in the last year" section.

There were a lot of Irish living in and around Port Jervis, working on building the RR in that area back then, so this guy was probably a RR worker (Laborer), and they didn't have the best of reputations, lots of drinking and fighting.....but what prompted an English woman to shoot this guy??? That would be interesting to know don't you think?

There really is nothing new under the sun.
