If there is one thing I hate to damn near bigotry

It's anime, the anime subculture and Japan by extension. I can not stand those people that are obsessed with all things Japanese. And some of them are my friends! It takes much inner strength to keep from reaching out and strangling them when they start talking about Japan this and Japan that.

Yes, I realize that you're Japan's equivalent of a creepy stalker who lurks in the bushes outside his victim's home while [insert adult comment here]. **** already.

The fact that their most favorite parts of Japanese culture are so despicable that the Japanese themselves find it incredibly offensive only adds to that hatred. Then there of course is the whole "Japan can do no wrong" mentality that I see.

"Those girls in that cartoon are like 13, WTF?"
"No no, they only look 13, they're really 40!"
    "..."

Or more recently, gaming blog Kotaku has taken on sexism in games as a sort of pet project, writing a bunch of articles basically declaring just about everything to do with video games sexist. "That game has a male lead, that's so sexist!"

Ok, so maybe they didn't actually say it in that article, but they have before! I just can't be bothered to find it. Another example is that they ran some articles about how the term 'raped' when applied using one of it's actual definitions is some how homophobic. No. Just ******* no.

At anyrate, I digress. The point is that they believe more games should have female leads and because there's not a 50/50 balance between male and female leads, it means that sexism is clearly at play. Oh but hey, a video game based entirely upon the premise of raping a school girl with a damned gun is totally kosher because it's Japanese yo~

I also love FMA, and that video made me laugh.

I have a friend living in japan for college "studies"... he's been going to college over there for 12 years...

I have nothing that is safe for work to add to this conversation, and will withdraw from saying anything related to strange culture in anime pertaining to tentacles, and other strange things.

The tentacles don't really bother me, mostly because I just don't watch that crap but also because it's whatev. I find it weird and creepy, whatever floats your boat.

The thing that gets me fuming is the school girl crap. Those girls are drawn to appear 13-14 and then the writers just slap on "they're really 40" as an extremely poor attempt to keep it from being called child porn. Look, I don't care what arbitrary age the creators wish to give them, at the end of the day they're still designed to look like underaged girls. So don't give me the BS that they're 40, because at the end of the day it doesn't really matter. A pile of **** is still a pile of **** even if you try calling it a rose.

It really doesn't help that a great number of the people I personally know that are obsessed with these anime are perverted sociopaths with serious mental health issues.

Now, I do like anime. The good ones can have great stories which really can't be told very well with live action. But then there's the other pitfall... Child heroes in every. Single. One. Seriously people, what the hell is this obsession with children? -____-

Meh, from having lived in Japan for a few years all I can say is this --

For all the "violence towards children" that happens in Japanese magazines, the are a culture remarkably free of actual violence and rape towards children. I saw some very 'violent' magazines, especially those that featured art from Bleach, Goruchan and even a few with dolcett-ish themes. I have a sneaking suspicion that being able to fantasize about things keeps a lid on for those who might otherwise be driven to actually 'act out' their fantasies. The forbidden has always been more attractive than the allowed.

I have a friend who also lived in Japan, and my brother is currently stationed in Okinawa. From what they've said, Japan has the highest suicide rate and most rampant AIDS problem.

Are you positing that the printed pages are causing AIDS? Whatintheheck are they Doing with those comics!??!?!?!?!?
Begging your pardon, but saying that hentai, lollicon, manga, futanari is causing suicides and AIDS is pretty much like coming to OpenCarry.Org and saying that the reason the U.S has a high murder rate is because we have guns.

A casual relationship is not a causal relationship.

I never said any such thing, nor meant to imply it. Had I meant to say that animae lead to AIDS, I would have said so. I did not say that, because I agree, casual does not equal causation.

I was only stating what I have heard from people who have been there.

I was just yanking your chain, PPM, I was fairly sure you'd never make such an outlandish claim unless you were under the influence of mind altering substances

There has indeed been an increase in the incidents of AIDS/HIV, but it started from such a low number that it is still lower than the incidence in the U.S. (As an example, going from 1 case to 2 would be a 100% increase, but the only numbers you can really use to compare infection rates is x/per 100,000 of population or other such measurement.) I want to say the x/N number is still much lower than in other countries, but I haven't found any definitive numbers more recent than 2006.

Well, it's not like there's any commonly accepted 'chainyanking' font. There's a forum with an ironic/sarcasm font, but it's a really ugly color.

I like Cowboy Be-Bop and Ghost In The Shell series. As far as the schoolgirl fetish animes, I'm not a huge fan. FMA is OK as well, I just haven't seen enough of that series to adequately comment.

On the point made above, that because the fetishists in Japan have an outlet, I agree fully. In our "free" country, we seem to be so hung up about nudity, sex, and education about both, that we create more 'philes', than anyone will care to admit. I worked at an adult nightclub by Sea-Tac airport at the time when the cities were all clamoring to adopt the 6-Foot Rule. Citing that strip clubs promulgated rape, disease, prostitution, all the sins of humanity and adultery blah blah blah.... when the truth is just the opposite. Those contractors who entertained men in an adult environment, were kept OFF the streets as hookers and disease spreading women of ill repute. The men who patronized the clubs were less likely to actually go out and rape someone, (sorry I cannot provide actual data or studies that agree with this, or statistics, or articles written in science publications..... but they do exist somewhere.). A look at other countries sex crime stats confirm this notion, and they have nudity in the TV commercials, for petes' sake!

I remember watching a Japanese game show that had topless women being the game pieces in a "Concentration" like game. And Europe has the always entertaining Colpo Grosso / Tutti Frutti show with the CinCin dancers... and amateurs doing strip-shows as part of the contest.
