We've praised him in the past, and he has supported our 2A efforts.

Now, perhaps we can return the favor.

From the James River Journal:

Press release: York County, VA- Earlier in the week, the York County Board of Supervisors were presented options for significantly reducing the FY2013 budget. The Sheriff’s Office reduction was $825,000 which equates to a reduction of 12 deputy sheriffs. It was the largest reduction for any organization other than schools.

Sheriff Diggs has serious concerns that the loss of 12 deputy sheriffs will significantly reduce both the safety of our citizens and the remaining deputies. It is very important for citizens to contact the Board of Supervisors and express their concerns.

The Sheriff encourages York County citizens to contact the BOS by email or by phone to express their concerns and ask the Board to reconsider the proposed reduction in deputy sheriffs so that we can keep our community safe.

Citizens can call the Budget Hotline at 890-3220, attend the budget hearing on March 22,

After all he has given to the citizens there, neither he nor his department deserve this.

Times are hard, the BoS needs to look harder at other areas.

It takes time in addition to funding to build the type of organization that Danny Diggs has accomplished. It could we wiped out with one stroke of the pen and be set back a decade.

Don't let this happen!

Crisis averted!

From the Daily Press website (10:01 p.m. EDT, March 13, 2012)

"The York County Board of Supervisors Tuesday decided more than $1.5 million in cuts to the York-Poquoson Sheriff's Office and the Department of Fire & Life Safety would be too detrimental to public safety. The supervisors made their decision after hearing from York-Poquoson Sheriff Danny Diggs and York Fire Chief Stephen Kopczynski, who said the loss in funding would result in cutting deputies and firefighters, and impact service to citizens."

Well that's good to hear. There are certain municipalities (none in VA that I am aware of) that are slashing police and firefighter budgets up to 50%, even dissolving whole agencies and reverting to exclusive mutual aid. But they can still afford to pay for landscaping and other frivolous items.

Good for Sheriff Danny Diggs - he is a straight talker. Happy to see he got his message across and that the BoS responded favorably.

Apparently Hell freezes at 73*F. Also, for some reason the sun continues to move across the sky/the Earth spins on its axis.

York BOS does the right thing for the right reason.

stay safe.

I sent the BoS an email thanking them for reversing their initial decision and copied Sheriff Diggs.

I also asked them not to play the game of threatening to cut essential services (School, Fire) to rouse the citizens for a property tax increase. We already know that one is coming they just have to cut non-essential stuff first before letting us know how much it will be.
