Current law allows the operator of any state or local government property, choosing to ban firearms, to simply slap up a “no firearms” sign while doing nothing to ensure the safety of those entering the property. HB 2729 would require them to also control access to the property using law enforcement officers, or armed guards and metal detectors, and would allow the operator of the property to be sued if they don’t comply with the law.
There is strong opposition to this from state agencies and local governments who prefer disarmed subjects instead of armed law abiding citizens on “their” property. An effort is underway to bury HB 2729 in the Senate Rules Committee to prevent it from being debated on, and voted by, the full Senate – the final steps necessary to be sent to the Governor’s desk.
It is critical that members of the Senate Rules Committee understand that their actions on HB 2729 are being monitored and that the bill needs to pass out of the committee.
A letter has been prepared and is waiting for you to send to the committee members at AzCDL's Legislative Action Center.
Sent! Thanks for the form!
And forwarded to several others so they can send as well.
We thank everyone who contacted the Senate Rules Committee about HB 2729.
Over 5,000 emails went to the committee members. That’s impressive! And it worked!
We have learned that HB 2729, which would require operators of state and local government property, wishing to ban firearms, to control access using law enforcement personnel or armed guards and metal detectors, has been scheduled for a review by the Senate Rules Committee on Monday, April 2nd.
We need to keep the pressure on. AzCDL’s Legislative Action Center message to the Senate Rules Committee members has been updated to reflect the scheduled hearing. It’s time for another round of emails. If you have already contacted the committee, please do so again with the new message. If you have not contacted the committee members, now is your time to make a difference.

Done, yet again!!
Hey Fred, just to let you know, Joe Nye signed me up for AZCDL (finally) at the Prescott Valley gun show.
A short while ago, the Senate Rules Committee (after receiving over 7,000 emails) passed HB 2729 out of committee. It is now headed for a Senate Committee of the Whole (COW) debate followed by a Third Read vote. Assuming it survives it goes to the Governor.
