As codified into law is harmful. Very much like the temerity with which VCDL supported the VA "Castle Doctrine" bills early on during this year's assembly they discovered that those bills would actually WEAKEN the very broad common and case law protections we enjoy.
Anytime the government asserts to define the parameters of or consequences for an action, they chip away at those protections.
I believe Florida's "Stand your ground" law, from a statutory standpoint, would be harmful in Virginia. It's proven, at the very least, a nuisance in Florida because it has made the Zimmerman case a political one rather than a legal one. And while neither are ideal, I would still prefer a legal contest over a political one.
