Just an FYI for those who had trouble getting on today at lunch

We came under attack by either a DDOS or a bot net registration swarm coming from Russia. I solved the problem by banning the whole Russian Federation.

I really do hate having to block whole countries where there might be people interested in the topic or where US citizens might be travelling but I have no recourse.

Since I blocked China, we have rejected literally MILLIONS of connections from there, most of which were bots attempting to register and post spam.

Anyway, I just wanted to share.

That sucks. I think there is a lot of interest in self-defense in Russia. They even have an advocacy group (http://vooruzhen.ru/....in Russian) trying to get handguns legalized (right now they can only own/carry pistols that shoot rubber bullets). But I guess there's no help for it.

If a legitimate user really wanted to get on from a blocked country, it's fairly simple to use proxies, a VPN, or Tor to browse without issues. None of these things would work very well for a bot or a DDoS attack.

Maybe it's possible to redirect "blocked" traffic to a landing page stating: "Sorry, your country is blocked. If you're an actual person, Google how to use a proxy, VPN or Tor!"

My fellow open carriers, I'm pleased to tell you today that I've implemented code that will ban Russia forever. We begin blocking in five minutes.

Life is rough in the big city and more tools were required to afford OCDO adequate protection.

OCDO was getting entirely too many spammers and worse, who were avoiding the normal safeguards. Consequentially, the administration concluded that further stringent controls were necessary.
