If you do not have a CC permit, a gun in your car must be unloaded and the ammunition stored separately to comply with DNR law. You are right to be confused, as the contradictory laws are very confusing.

My point was that driving around with it loaded, illegally, and then grabbing and handling the gun quickly when a police vehicle is behind yours will not only get you in legal trouble but may get your head blown off. If you are an LEO approaching a vehicle, and the driver is racking the slide on a pistol, what would your reaction be?

The WVCDL is growing by leaps and bounds. We had a very successful booth at the National Hunting and Fishing Days at Stonewall resort. Thirty new members signed. One of which was one of Joe Manchins escorts (a DNR Officer) around the grounds. There was black shirts everywhere. Even had an exchanging of minds with Mr. Fudd. One thing I like about WVCDL is they don't discriminate between OC or CC. Exercising your right in the way that best suits yourself. I do both OC and CC. I think almost ALL the DNR officers stopped by our booth. The one thing the 2ndA dose not need is in fighting between 2ndA advocates. We should support all legal forms of carry. Just because someone is more comfortable carrying CC or OC don't mean they are doing something wrong. Please check out WVCDL.ORG and check out the FB page. I started strictly OC, I have since went to mostly CC. Mainly because my main carrying firearm is a small framed Taurus .380. It is just easier to CC than to OC that firearm. There is a good FB page West Virginia Open Carry. the mod's on the page are members of the BoD of WVCDL. I think were up to over 4100 followers, with about 1300 paid members. We do what we can by ourselves. But there is strength in numbers. Try to attend some of the OC/CC/NC luncheons, they are happening much more often. There is at the Crosslanes Bob Evens once a moth now. WVCDL is doing things right. I enjoyed the Hunting and Fishing Days this weekend very much. People were very excited about our group, many had never heard of us. The DNR officers were behind us 100%. There were over 100 people added to the FB page just this weekend. Stay tuned here on opencarry.org and with the WVCDL. Carry on my friends.

The WV AG is also a member of WVCDL. He is the best thing that has happened in WV politics in a long time. He has updated the Gun laws booklet. He is working in ALL areas of WV rights.

Did we talk for awhile outside the tent? It was a good day, I learned a lot from the more seasoned members.

I think you meant "experienced." Some of us aren't quite old enough to be called "seasoned" yet. :)

Some still prefer "seasoned" - as in a peppery w/salt and vinagar crust served with a smile. Experiences we have, but it is that exterior layer that serves us so well. Most of us are ol' softies inside though - loving our kids, pets, and flag with equal passion :)

It is not an age thing - it is a state of mind

Your right I did mean experienced. I used the word seasoned as in using the talking points of the WVCDL. You don't have to be old to be seasoned:lol:

So yeah, could have sworn I had posted about some of my encounters with LEOs while OCing since moving to WV... but I cant seem to find it anywhere on the site, so I thought I would share... forgive me in advance, I don't recall dates for all these events.

I live in Eleanor, and I regularly carry to the Speedway in Winfield with no issues. My only encounter in that Speedway was about a week or so into my OC adventure, one of the customers at the register across from me said something about a "gun", to which their cashier asked "who?", the gentleman pointed at me which is when i acknowledged them and the fact that I was OCing. Had a short conversation about it and that was it. No other incidents in over 2 years since then.

I OC regularly to the Walmart in Hurricane, and have had NO incidents there other than one of the ladies at the sports counter telling me that OCing was NOT legal in WV, but I am also pretty sure she did not even see my gun, or at least she did not react as such, no LEOs were called that I know of, so I am assuming she never saw it, or chose not to make a deal of it.

I also OC regularly to Sam's Club in South Charleston and have never had an issue there. I did, on my first visit while OCing, ask to talk to a manager, and had a short talk with them about what the company policy was. No issues to report, they are definitely OC friendly.

I also OC regularly in Subway, both in Winfield and Buffalo and have had no issues.

Once a month or so, i stop in at Panera Bread in South Charleston to have lunch with my mother, and none of the employees have ever said anything to me, but a few customers have stopped by the table and asked questions while i was eating.

I do, however, remember one incident where I was OCing in Foodland in Eleanor and was confronted by a plain-clothes officer. The officer approached me from the rear while I was shopping and made a gesture like he was reaching for my firearm. I spun around and slapped his hand away and asked him what the HELL he thought he was doing. He replied that he was an police officer and he wanted to know what i was doing carrying a gun in public. I politely informed him that it was my right to OC, and went on about my shopping. When i left the store, he was outside waiting for me and he proceeded to engage me in a conversation about how i should be careful carrying a gun around and how it could get me shot because an officer might think i am making a threatening gesture and shoot me! I politely excused myself and left. In retrospect, i wish i had gotten his name and badge number... but i was new to the whole idea of OCing and was more scared than pissed.

Since then, not much else to report... almost 2 years and no problems anywhere i have been.

Overall, finding WV to be pretty tolerant despite how uncommon it is to see someone OCing.

The best way to search posts for yours or any particular user is to look via their Profile or click on their user name.

OC and the understanding of it are spreading through the educational efforts of people like you simply doing it, as well as taking the time to answer questions. That and many people are just not buying what the antis are selling any more.

In Weirton???

Its been about 5 years since I OC'd in West Virginia - but I had no problems whatsoever in Hancock and Brooke Counties.

I did get eyeballed by a sheriff deputy when I was walking from my vehicle to a shop in the plaza at Pennsylvania Ave and Penco Rd. But he just gave me a nod when I noticed him.

WOW! I OC when I use my power wheelchair, but get stopped by every officer I encounter. I guess its because they think I'm already in my getaway vehicle, lol. Maybe we should all get together in our area and have a get together like they did across the river in Steubenville, OH a couple of years ago as an information event. The police there were very supportive of it. We might be able to include some firearms safety as a part of it. Any thoughts?

Granny if you are on Facebook, check out the group West Virginia Open Carry. Most of their meetups are in your area.

While I generally support WVCDL I would not say they do not discriminate between OC/CC.
During their protests they have organized they have specifically prohibited OC thus precluding my participation.

Every protest I've seen they've only requested not OC due to the rules of that area (when they protested Fudd in Charleston, etc).

I know of some WVCDLers who open carried during the range dedication (Dents Run in Mannington) that Fudd was speaking.

Which protests? To my knowledge there have been 2, one in Martinsburg, the other in Charles Town. I was at both of them. OC, as were many others.

Again I just want to say I support WVCDL WHOLEHEARTEDLY. The first few weeks of my membership there was a few manchin protests. I will try to find the posts through the history but it's going to take lots of looking. Save to say OC wasn't welcome. I will try to get a few screen shots for proof.

I think I know some people here too. ;)

I have attended most of the WVCDL protests over the years. There were 2 Manchin protests at his offices in Charleston and Martinsburg (in late 2012/early 2013 I believe) where they requested people not OC. That was the only time I recall that request. There was a specific reason but I don't remember what it was, possibly the close proximity to federal property where weapons are prohibited.

At every other protest OC was welcome, including one outside a dinner at the Charleston Civic Center attended by Manchin, Rockefeller, and Joe Biden.
