Edit: I meant to start a separate thread for this instead of keeping it mixed in the Hampton thread... perhaps a Mod can correct that? Thanks!

This discussion originally started in the Hampton thread (LINK). I contacted Dicks via email and asked what their corporate policy was regarding the lawful carrying of firearms by its customers. This is the reply:

Hi Mike,
Thank you for contacting DICK'S Sporting Goods.

It is always our goal to ensure our customer's satisfaction by offering quality brand products, store services and the best customer care to all of our valued customers. We appreciate your inquiry. We do not allow firearms in our store with ammunition in them. If you are bringing a firearm into the store it must be cleared and on safe. An associate will then escort you and your firearm to the Lodge department where they can assist you.

We truly appreciate your time and we value your patronage.

Thank you and best regards,

Oh well, wasn't that fond of them anyway, but that makes the consideration a deal breaker.

The email I am sending to Dicks:

To Whom It May Concern

I just received notice from a member of www.Opencarry.org regarding a reply to his
question regarding carry of a self defense firearm in your stores.

As I don’t shop where I am required to give up my right to self defense, I
will not be shopping in Dick’s Sporting Goods anytime soon. No Guns = No Money.

I can understand a firearm brought in for repair/service that needs to be
handled in the store needing to be unloaded and secured to prevent negligent
discharge. But I cannot abide by being forced to handle my self defense weapon
unnecessarily to unload before entering and again to reload after leaving.

I replied back to them inquiring if they accepted full responsibility, and liability, for the safety of their customers... since they are prohibiting law abiding guns owners the means to protect themselves. I'll post any reply I receive.

(Thanks to the Mod for correcting the thread! :) )

Maybe their customer service rep is 'mistaken'....(read that as: 'making it up based on his own anti-gun bias'.... :uhoh:)

I'll reply again, asking that my email be forwarded up to a manager.

The person who responded obviously responded to a firearm coming in for service, not a sidearm that will remain in its holster.

I would talk to someone to clarify....

I know for a fact that we have had corporate reps in the store while we had people OC'ing and had no issues.

That corporate policy was news to me. I've OCd at Dick's stores a few times w/o incident but then I don't go out of my way looking for "No firearms" notices hidden away in small print on the small windows beside the pedestrian doors. Especially stores which sell firearms & ammo!

I was very clear in my request that I was asking about the 'lawful carrying of firearms'. If anyone else wants to shoot them an email and try to re-phrase it differently.... please do. I freely admit that I'm not always the best 'word smith'... lol

That said, I did reply back to them and requested that my service ticket be forwarded up to a manager for resolution.

Your request was clear as day, but their response was sort of... "side-steppish". Their response was inadequate.

I would respond back to include a scenario where a person is carrying a sidearm in a secured holster.... not to be serviced, handled or anything.

@DJEEPER...
sorry if you've already stated, but are you allowed to carry while working at your store? or is there an employee policy forbidding it?

At this point I have requested manager involvement... so I'm going to wait for that before I proceed. Once I have contacted someone 'in charge', then I'll make sure they are clear in what the issue addresses.

Hopefully... the Customer Service guy is wrong/confused/about to be reprimanded.... :uhoh:

It seems to me that Dick's Sporting Goods confirmed to OCDO back in 2008 or 2009 that open carry is perfectly acceptable in their stores where allowed by law. I've been digging around for the announcement by John or Mike, but I have not yet resorted to the search function.
