It seems to me that Dick's Sporting Goods confirmed to OCDO back in 2008 or 2009 that open carry is perfectly acceptable in their stores where allowed by law. I've been digging around for the announcement by John or Mike, but I have not yet resorted to the search function.

If you can find it, that would be great... I'll send that to their Customer Service people!!

@DJEEPER...
sorry if you've already stated, but are you allowed to carry while working at your store? or is there an employee policy forbidding it?

I am not allowed to carry while working due to employee policy. But every other time I go in while not on the clock I am open carrying. Everyone I work with knows I carry and has seen me carry. Never any issues.

I would be careful about that. I would be terminated immediately if I was caught OC'ing in my store, even while off the clock.

I guess I missed something...

Why did this sleeping dog get kicked?

They have a sign like Bass Pro's about bringing in guns (seemingly for service, again refer to Bass Pro).

All of the OC stories I've read about Dick's have been positive.

Did someone get asked to leave, sparking the inquiry to corporate?

If everyone on this forum only worked for an employer who let them OC on company property, I think a lot of people would be out of a job.

Did I miss something was there an issue or was this just a random inquiry. The reason I ask is I have OC'd at the Dick's in Charlottesville more times than I can count and I have never had an issue. I also have OC'd at one of the ones in Richmond twice without an issue either.

I'm surprised that no one taggd on....

the line:

If you are bringing a firearm into the store it must be cleared and on safe. An associate will then escort you and your firearm to the Lodge department where they can assist you.

not only am I disarmed..but I am 'escorted'. Isn't that what they do after they catch you shoplifting? 'Escort' you to the manager's office? Talk about making the good guy feel like a criminal...

Dick's. Where the management lives up to their name.

I asked that 3 posts prior, and no one has yet to explain.

There was a sign on a store, but it seemed to be like the Bass Pro signs that refer to guns brought in for servicing.

You know I had to explain to my wife the sign in Bass pro. I told her that was only for firearms being brought in for service or to fire at the range. If it is for my personal protection I can carry it through the store while I shop. Thats the way I have always understood it.

for you and Jay...
have a look starting at: http://forum.opencarry.org/forums/s...ampton-Roads&p=1773824&viewfull=1#post1773824 (post #5966)
DJEEPER and i were discussing and, as he works for one of the stores, i asked about dick's policy based on a sign i'd seen at the c'ville store. to be clear, there were no firearm prohibition signs posted.

It's for your own safety. I mean, they know they just forced you to be vulnerable, so they're assigning an employee as your personal bodyguard.

Sometimes I wonder if you guys take the time to actually read back trough the thread before posting..

Im going to spell this out for you ONE MORE TIME. After that, you can hang yourselves with whatever else you decide to manifest.

Dick's will take your firearm (rifle, bow, whatever) that you intend to SERVICE, check it in at the customer service desk, make sure it is unloaded, put a trigger lock on it, then put it in a box. At that time, you will be escorted to the lodge counter with your firearm in the care of the associate. Then the lodge associate will accept the firearm in the case and discuss with you what services you need. It is corporate policy that an associate has control over the firearm at all times for liability purposes...except for demonstration (like looking at it off of the rack). Even when you buy a rifle or shotgun from Dick's, you are not given posession of the firearm until you are out of the store (past the doors).

This AT NO TIME applies to any sidearm that you are open or conceal carrying. You guys tend to jump to conclusions like a pack of wolves with little or no critical thought.

we got the message....

Thats the fun part!

Ok..got it..you can OC in DICK'S. If you are getting your firearm serviced you have to check it at the counter. However, comma, I preferred it when it was Galyans. As far as shopping, I feel that there are other stores that can provide better value for my money.

I have had good service at Dick's. I've had bad service at Dick's.

For Ammo, I'd prefer Wal-mart. For camping gear (I do more of that than any other activity) I prefer REI and only purchase their store-brand equipment (for the 100% warrantee). For Lego's I go to Toys R Us.

That's funny, iirc both of these companies are Anti personal defense....
All the T R U's I've seen in VA are posted and I don't think I've heard/read of anyone in VA OC'ing successfully in REI.

If I'm wrong about REI can someone please enlighten me as my wife wants to go to the one in the Shortpump area.

I had to come into the area anyway this evening, so I OC'ed at Dicks. I needed barbell weights for my camera jib.

There are two here, The BIG Dick's and the Little Dicks on Rt 1. I went to the BIG Dick's in Short pump (which is a no guns area unless you go through a pro gun store front) and OC'ed right past their Security fellow. No one said a thing.

There are no signs of any kind I could see.

Gun nuts don't go to Dick's. Dick's can adapt, or go by the way of Gander Mountain. They have a tough time competing with gun shops in the Richmond area. I doubt they will remain in the firearms business.
