Regardless of who were talking about, I think its a little crossing the line to say "stop making friends with little girls" like someone is a sexual predator.
The point is: stop doing things that look suspicious and put you on the radar, no matter how innocent and honest your motivations.

Neal, I never want to see you telling anyone to "not talk to the police" again. This is your second time in as many months. If I see you offering this advise, I will reinforce it, but call you out as a hypocrite.

ETA: this thread more aptly named: Stainless still confused about not talking to cops.

There is a time and place. Firstly, never say always or never. After that, all things are flexible.

Thanks Yance, and DrTodd.

I do understand about not wanting paraphernalia to give them RAS, and I do not contest that point, however, they would notice the holster and mag pouch on my belt, and it's asking a lot to get not only my gun, but my holster, belt, pouch, keys and recorder, and put them on and off several times a day.

If I recall correctly, there is no law that states a holster and belt pouch can't be concealed.

Neil, for god's sake you talk too much. Nothing to stop this officer from checking things out and the prosecutor thinks it's illegal and charging you. They have nothing to lose and you have a lot to lose. DON'T TALK TO POLICE.

This!

I have seen in recent posts that you want to maintain a "low profile", but I seriously doubt that you truly understand what that means. To help you, "low profile" means:

1. No Police Contact.
2. No Drama.
3. Keep to Yourself as Much as Possible.

I am sure others can offer further suggestions...

I spoke with a Waterford Officer today about a barking dog, and the conversation went from the dog to my M1A magazine lying on my front seat. He asked if I had a gun in the car, pointing out the mag, and I confirmed saying that I had been shooting a couple days prior, and the gun was in the trunk. He didn't search or ask to see it, but asked about if I were transporting properly. I explained very breifly that it needed to be unloaded and cased, taken down, or in the trunk. He said he thought that I was supposed to be en route to or from a range, store, and so on. I said that I think he was referring to 231a, and the list of places you could go, but that it was not an all inclusive list, and that I was somewhat familliar with the law. I was holding my cards close. He referenced the empty holster mounted faithfully on my E-brake, I said that I used to have a CPL. He seemed satisfied, and Didn't pursue it any further.

All in all it was a good exchange which I had initiated, seeing him and another officer on foot on a side street chatting between themselves.

Neil,

Take it from a LEO... you talk to the police too much.

If I recall (please spare us a recap of your story) your CPL was revoked because you talked to the police, you should have remained silent and you would most likely still have your CPL.

Remember.... LOW PROFILE

Also remember, Billy Bob Thorton in Bad Santa was not low profile.

Awww jesus... not this s*** again...

But what if he DID ask to see it Stainless? What if he then (even if wrongly) stated you didn't meet the requirements for the list of acceptable reasons to transport and arrested you... then you have to post bail... then you have to retain counsel... etc...etc....

STAINLESS SHUT YOUR F-ING MOUTH WHEN TALKING TO THE POLICE

I'm beginning to think that you get into these situations ON PURPOSE... I'm begging to think you put the mag on the seat ON PURPOSE so you could then have your little verbal joust with the officer and "outwit" him with your legal genius....

WHO THE HELL PULLS UP TO THE POLICE WITH GUN STUFF JUST LAYING ON THE SEAT?!?!?! DO YOU PULL UP WITH A BONG LAYING THERE TOO?!!? WTF IS WRONG WITH YOU?!?!

What is most interesting to me, is that again, I wasn't breaking the law, but the .gov isn't understanding it either. Yet nothing is done, but to come after me here.

I goofed, I get it. I exercised the rights that I have according to the laws and their infringements. Again, had I stonewalled the officer, telling him nothing, he would have searched the vehicle, found nothing, and let me go. If I did have one of my guns in the car, then I would have gotten convicted of something I wasn't guilty of again. Many of you would have thought I deserned it, some would have rejoiced, and the rest that talk about injustice and "shall not be infringed" all the time, would have missed the point.

And if you would have just put the mag away before you even pulled up (don't get me started on the "protest holster") then you wouldn't have had to answer the question about the gun AT ALL.

I agree with you 1,000% on the bold, but you can be not breaking the law and still get your ass in a sling as you have seen countless other people do. HENCE DO NOT TALK TO THE POLICE.

When asked the question of "are their any guns in the vehicle", I would have answered either "I know you're just doing your job, but I don't care to discuss the contents of my vehicle" or "No, there are no illegal weapons in the vehicle" or "my lawyer has instructed me to not answer questions like that".

As far as the empty holster, I want to remind the police of the oaths they broke as often as possible.

Well you're going to have to make a choice then... do you want to have your little self-righteous moment or do you want to keep your butt on the better side of the gray bars?

It is a risk you currently CAN NOT afford to take. Cop sees the holster, uses it as RAS to search, finds a seed under your seat that someone thought it would be funny to toss in your open window as they walked by your parked car.... boom. Away you go.

You should know better.

Just had a talk with the Barry County Sheriff. Seems the County prosecutor is trying to prosecute (already charged the guy) for unlawful transport. That is he had a lawfully stored handgun in his car, but wasn't going to a range.

I explained to the sheriff that that law was changed and all lawful purposes are allowed. And the legislature is in fact trying to clarify that in a house bill. Sent him all the info I could.

So charges have and can be made. It has already cost this guy money and anxiety just because he let the LEO search his trunk. He did indeed talk too much as well.

BTW the Sheriff is pissed at this as he is a Constitutional guy and would never have his deputies enforce this anyway. He believes the law should be enforced only IF the firearm is used in a crime.

So Neil, as you know it can happen. Just stay on the down low for the next 8 years.

I heard (from the same source) the MSP was the ones doing the stop. The guy blew .07 and then consented to a search.
