this is new for me,, it is not the madison 5 from 2 years ago fame..
shawn was an original mad 5er, but i dont think auric gold was one of the mad 5

in the old mad 5 story, shaun winnich and frank hannan rock refused to ID and were arested, but
auric gold wasnt there then...

so now im confused...
the timing is right but the players are diffferent, and the original happened at evening time...
i dont remember a prostest get to gether after the original dust up...
i sure dont remember anyone getting arrested for the very same charges the madison 5 got!!

There was a protest get-together a few days later, better attended (by citizens & press) than the infamous Mad5 dinner. IIRC there was only 1 police car, sitting across the parking lot watching.

I remember it was uneventful, at least in re being arrested. (And of course nobody fainted, ran screaming in terror, etc.)

OK!!! I think I get it now...
this was an after the fact group... they were protesting the arrests that took place the previous saturday night.
Nobody got arrested during this news taped event.

I followed the madison 5 debockle from when it was a few MINUTES old!!!
I dont know why I never saw this vidio..

Hmmmmm, i dont recall that incident.....guns on their hips?! the streets ran red with blood...........no wait, someone there stepped on a bunch of catsup packets...my mistake.

Well this video showed up on another forum here in Missouri so I thought there has to be someone in Madison who can get this straight as folks here bat this about with no first hand information. Someone will post "The real story" on this?

It caught my eye because I OC'd at the sam eplace last month when i was in Madison. Oh, BTW, you guys have a great State!

the food and company were good, we were having a good time...................then the cops showed up. i think that kinda summarizes it (?)

If this incident happened AFTER the Von Hollen advisory memo, that tells me that leos are probably not up to date on CC nor do they care.

It was well past the memo issuance date. The police made the decision to force them to comply with their demands when no laws were violated. Taxpayers paid for it in the end instead of the police.

The Van Hollen memo was issued in April 2009. The Culver's incident occurred almost a year and a half later, in September 2010.

There were mistakes made by the Madison PD that night. They know it, and to their credit they seem determined not to repeat them. From what I've gotten out of an extended conversation with one of their training officers, they've made a great effort to provide good training to the force regarding both open carry and concealed carry. They haven't necessarily embraced carry, but it's safe to say they are resigned to live with it and to try to peacefully coexist with it.

Of course, that's no guarantee that every individual LEO is completely current on all aspects of the laws, nor that they will necessarily share your perspective on gun carry, but I'm confident that the climate for carry is much better in Madison now and the chances of having an uncalled-for and regrettable incident are low in Madison.

The incident was a significant turning point in Wisconsin. There was a lot of backlash from ignorant people and anti-gun folks who wanted to see the book thrown at the Culver's guys. But they were shown to be wrong. On the other hand, there was an even larger swell of support for those guys and it put gun rights in the forefront of the news for quite a long time. As a result the pro-gun rights movement gained a lot of strength and respect around the state. Now we see ordinary people who have no real interest in devoting time to the gun rights cause taking an interest in gun carry to protect themselves and their families. The Culver's guys just wanted to enjoy some comradery and food while exercising their right to carry, and they ended up providing a learning experience for everyone. The whole Culver's episode, along with a few other noteworthy incidents, did much to fight our greatest enemy and the major tool of our opponents: ignorance.

I once said that I intended to make Madison a gun-friendly town. That was about 15 years ago. It's not exactly friendly yet, but it's far less hostile than it once was.

I think the police, at least in Madison, are trying to do their part now. We can do ours: Know the law, follow it. Know your rights, protect and exercise them. The battle has shifted primarily to Milwaukee-- it probably has always been primarily in Milwaukee for that matter.

Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen issued his advisory memorandum April 20, 2009. Prior to the "Madison Five" incident.

One of the things that was true then, and is still true:

Among LEOs and Gun Carriers some know the gun law and questioning and arrest standards, better than others.

Yep You are right. Know the law and follow it and yes I get the feeling that the battle is now being 'fought' in Milwaukee. That city may not 'succumb' easily in accepting OC. I suppose they are begrudgingly accepting CC.

How many cops have you had contact with who think laws don't apply to them? I had one on my land, in violation of a notice of trespass, and had to escort him out and all the while he claimed the notice did not apply to police, when it did. I told him to check with the town's attny and I did not expect to see him back on my land again. Oddly enough, he did not come back ... go figure. One has to remain calm and remember your goal: remain alive.

Soooo, the news talks to aurik,, but he isnt a madison 5er, a far as i know.
And Shawn,, a guy that had been arrested in the madison 5 fun times, came to this event!

My quiry?? Are any of the other madison 5 guys showing in this "after the fact" video?

ETA::: lots times guys that are arrested, dont feel like being exposed to a rearrest a few days later...
I am proud of shawn for showing up to this event.!!

This was the next day and i was busy.

Auric was interviewed as a WCI board member.

25 people showed back up a week later and the mad 5 have been there at least once since.
