2 men escape from Black River correctionl tuesday night

I just like how the local news is all over the shooting in Colorado, but keep the locals in the dark about 2 escape convicts. They stole 3 cars and a possible 4th, a shotgun, and held a lady at gunpoint forcing her to drive them to tomah then sparta. They were last seen near 131 by Tomah. Apparently they just up and walked out the front doors of the correctional facility without so much as being asked a question.

I don't think they have very much security there, they don't even have fences I think. I used to hunt back in that area & from what I could tell it was just a long driveway. Not sure if my time frame is correct, but a year or so ago someone else escaped from there.

I too hunt and recreate around that area and know exactly what you are talking about. I think the story writer may have used the wrong term for the facility these guys ran from. There is a fully secure and fenced prison with guard towers just outside of Black river falls (on airport rd.) Which is very close to the casino, likely why they ended up there stealing a car. Black river's "industrial park" is in the same area. If you ride the ATV trails they used to come into Black River following the fence perimeter, but I think they rerouted them further from the prison. (on google maps the prison is the grounds that's shaped like a baseball home plate)
The facility you are thinking of is the one called Black river correctional center and is located out on Staffon and Kirch rd. by Staffon flowage just north of hwy 54. It's pretty much just a couple of very low security dorms in the woods. No fences and just swipe cards to get through a couple light duty doors. I think that facility is more of a halfway house and actually let's their guys outside and stuff. Likely there to house drunk drivers and deadbeat dads.

The story does not make it very clear weather it was the correctional center or the correctional institution, but indicates that it was the correctional center. From my understanding the correction center was for people that had a few months or weeks left. They take the prisoners to the county parks to clean them up, mostly racking the leaves from what I've seen.

It was the minimum security facility, were they house people to prepare them to re enter society. They are still at large and according to monroe county the FBI is now involved in the case. The last stolen car was reported as seen in the Hillsboro and Elroy areas friday. And people call me paranoid for carrying, they both have semi violent records, but the 29yr old has the worse of the two records.
