I just wanted to know if there are any open carriers in the Colorado springs area? cause Ive never seen any. and if so have you ran into any issues with the public or police in this area ?

I OCed in CS and Manitou yesterday. I carry an old 1911 in a drop leg holster. I have been OCing for almost a year. Not every day, but as the mood strikes me. With the well worn leather jacket, and 4 day old beard it wasn't likely that anyone would mistake me for LE.

First of all, I have NEVER had any problem with CSPD, or any other LE while OCing. I rarely get any response from anyone, but yesterday was an active day.

I was standing by my motorcycle outside of Chick-Fila (how ever you spell that,) Smoking a cig, and finishing up my tasty beverage, when a man pulled up next to me and caught my attention with "Sir!" He than said "I just want you to know that I appreciate you open carrying." I said thank you and walked over and shook his hand.

I was walking a busy sidewalk in Manitou when a man stopped, smiled, and said "That's a fine sight, Sir." I just smiled, shook his hand and moved on.

On the way home, I stopped by a liquor store for some late afternoon beer. As always nothing but smiles and pleasantries from the staff.

As I was leaving, some kid that looked to be about 7 years old that appeared to be with his grandparents Shouted "Hey, that guy's got a gun!" I turned around, and he said it again, while grandpa twisted his ear to get him to shut up. There wasn't any fear in the kid's voice, just surprise. I put on the biggest friendliest smile that I could and said "That's horrible." The still smiling, I said "So what's wrong with carrying a gun?" Then I got on my bike and rode off.

The kid shouting, was the most significant response that I have ever gotten from the public, and even that was no big deal.

So if you are nervous about OCing and would like to take a walk sometime, feel free to let me know.

You'll find me standing in front of the Lexington and Woodmen King Soopers having a chocolate milk with my GF just about every evening approximately between 8-8:30 -- at least with how daylight's running now.

I'm new to the group as well, I've been OCing for about a month now. I haven't had any problems with any LOE or civilians, the only comment I've ever had is a cashier at King Super asked me what I was carrying one day. We then had about a 10 minute conversation about sidearms while he was helping other customers. I think most people don't even notice that you have it. I was at the corner store down the street from my house and saw my neighbor there while I OCed once, talked to him for about 5 minutes in the store and he told me the next day he didn't even notice I had a gun untill I was walking out the door and he saw the butt of it. I'm always open for gettting together with others who OC when I'm not busy, so if you ever want to get out let me know.

What did Walmart lady say that was a lie?

I'm not privy to that information. To be honest I'm not that sure she did or did not. But by the way the the officer acted when he first saw me and the way he talked to the woman. I would assume she had lied in some capacity. Also her words "he's going to kill us all" I'm pretty sure she did lie to them in some way.

All I know is I don't have a record of anything.

no no i was meaning like if your in the school zone and walk from your house to your car OC how it works with the zone and all. not meaning once your in the car or on your property but the getting there. if you have to walk on "public" land.

thanks for the help though everyone as i said for some reason im hazy tonight on the school zone thing. hope that it helped though

I live in a school zone. In fact, my house backs up to the playground. I don't worry about it and I read somewhere they can't stop you from owning and carrying your firearms. Also, I am on private property from my house to my car and it is legal to carry open or concealed on your own private property.

I also ride a scooter in the summertime for all of my driving. I go past the school in my travels without a worry. I feel some of you are a bit nervous with your open carrying and you shouldn't be. You are not breaking any laws. the sheriffs deputies I know are all pro-gun and like to see carriers on the street. It makes them feel the streets are safer.

Yes, both.
Someone else already explained the "1000' from the property line" thing.
Exemptions are if you're on private property, or you have a license issued by the state where the school is, or have permission from the school to be near or on their property while armed... There are a couple others, but those would be the most common.
Check your state statutes, then read 18USC922... um... section q I think.

Not for the purpose of the "gun-free" school zone law.

I was told by a officer its 1000 feet from school property.
You were lucky - got someone who actually knows the law.
In general, don't ask legal advice from LEO. You're likely to be told their opinion, or guess, instead of the actual statute.

On private property, no.
But on the sidewalk, street, etc. it is against the law except in certain circumstances.

So you have a carry license issued by the state where the school is, right?
Just because it's never happened (that we know of) that someone has been arrested & charged solely for carrying without an exception in a "gun-free" school zone, doesn't mean it will never happen.

Unless you're carrying within 1000' of the edge of a 1-12 school property without a license, or other exception.

I have seen very few people OC when I'm out and about. I did see a guy OC on a motorcycle yesterday along South Academy. I carry in my car when I can, and I intend to purchase a holster and belt soon so I can OC when possible. I work on a military base and am unable to carry in my car or on my person to and from work. Ridiculous in my opinion, but that doesn't count for much.

Could you explain what you mean? In Colorado your car is your private property period. Or a cite to what your referring to? [/B]

In Colorado we have a great number of educated LEO unlike many other states. sure take everything they say with a grain of salt and never base a decision on what they have said always do your own homework, but here there not all out to get us.

So you have a carry license issued by the state where the school is, right?

What carry license are you referring to? A CHP? and why would he need one if he was on his personal vehicle just driveing through?

Wow what a formating disaster my comp doesnt want to multi quote right sorry about that...

OC in Colorado Springs

I just wanted to know if there are any open carriers in the Colorado springs area? cause Ive never seen any. and if so have you ran into any issues with the public or police in this area ?

I OC in Colorado Springs at my apartment building only when I take out the trash and sometimes through the halls of the building which freaks out some of the tenants a little. A few of them have asked me " why are you carrying a gun " and I tell them " because I can ". ;)
The apartment manager knows that I conceal carry and sometimes open carry and she's cool with it.
I have never seen another civilian open carry in the Springs but I have seen hunters OC in walmart up in Craig and Steamboat Springs.
I to would like to know if it is OK to OC in the Springs, IE: can I walk down the block to the 7-11 carrying openly ?

I have seen probably three or four in the last few years, in Colorado Springs (outside of gun stores and the like), and I would probably see more if I paid better attention. It's not super common but it's not unheard of either.

OC always in Springs unless I'm coming directly off base. Most OCers I have observed were barely noticeable and carried themselves normally. You've probably passed us by without noticing. Welcome to OC.

@ shaun:

Well, maybe not a day late and $ short...or maybe, just a serendipitous coincidence you posted here, considering you live in Fountain:

One of our 2 OC Get-Together events for this month of May is in YOUR neighborhood: @ IHOP (next to Applebee's) on Sunday, 5-25-14 @ 2:30pm, in Fountain/Security.

Check the Colorado area, "Colorado Events" threads now and in the future for more OC events in the COS area -- and other city/towns in the COS/Denver areas. For example, we're going up North to Golden for our 5-18-14 event. Then 2 more events in June -- Castle Rock and Aurora.

And BTW, if that IHOP @ Lake Ave. & Southgate Rd. (across from Home Depot) tends to get Ft. Carson people, we could make THAT place a future OC event location, too. Even if soldiers can't carry on base (due to PC Bravo-Sierra, all the way up the clueless Chain of Command to the very top), they can at least carry with us "civilians" at an OC event.

And some of us are retired military/veterans...so we're not completely 100% civilian! ;-)

I stopped by a loaf n jug. To fill up my truck. I had then a m&p .40. I was paying at the pump at looking around as I don't really like filling my truck late at night (was around 12-1am). Suddenly I see a police car rushing up. I'm all kinds of confused and he jumps out yelling for me to get on the ground. So I instantly do as told. I'm zip tied hands he checks my pockets and drags everything out. Finds a couple of s&w knifes car keys iPod iPhone speaker wallet keys etc. as he goes through his routine asking questions etc. he asks me why I have a weapon. I answer "for personal protection because Girly slaps don't work to well." he laughed telling me I can't really remember. Somthing along the lines of shaving my beard. I'm still Ziped tied and he cobtinues asking me questions. Such as why im out where im going etc. I clear my background check and he cuts the tie saying I'm free to go as soon as we visit inside the station. As soon as the door opens we hear "he's going to kill us all!" he tells me I'm free to go now and hands me my pistol back. The manager walks me over to the counter apologizing to me and activates a $50 gift card. I walk out noticing the cop speaking with a really wide short old woman. she's yelling at him now. I walk out and hear the cop saying "we have gone through this before with you" the door closes and I leave.

It was probably over 30 minutes but I was to confused and nervous to care about time. Also I was laughing a lot to. Pretty sure my blatant confusion helped and the cop has seen me before.

This is called a violation of civil rights. Sounds like the water-head SWATTed you and the officer fell for it. Surprised I haven't heard about this one in relation to the city being suited as it was with the guy at the pridefest a couple years back. The other needed result is that woman should be charged with a crime or committed for mental problems if she is playing chicken little.

I've open carried the few times I go to CS, though I live north of Denver. My parents live(d) in CS, my mom is still there and she is definately not friendly to any kind of carry let alone guns. Her problem is, she wants help with stuff - if I am not armed, I don't go. If she doesn't like it she can move back to Canada as she has always talked about.

Not a CS story, but the last couple days I was OCing and was by the dentist's office, he asked about the gun 3 times - what kind is that, what caliber etc. When I was leaving he was on his computer in his office - I think he was ordering parts from Lone Wolf Distributing to deck out his Glock the way mine is. Yesterday I was at Sushi Katsu and about halfway thru my lunch another customer was seated at the bar beside me had returned from the bathroom and seen my firearm and said "Nice Glock."

For the most part, sane people realize that people going about their everyday business with a holstered firearm aren't there to threaten anyone. Liberals on the other hand are the ones that cause problems, and may say things like "Your paranoid for carrying a gun". In actuality, they are the ones who are paranoid - its an open carry state, if it bothers them that much they need to move back to CA, NY or whichever socialist kill zone they came from. I carry a gun because a cop is too heavy.
