The other month while at the local library my Internet browsing was halted by wireless software called BARRACUDA.

To gain access to the site I had to "register" with the library.

BARACUDA, a software trade name, is generated by a firm in Canada and may be in widespread use by libraries through out this nation, funded by, in whole or in part by one or more US Federal and state agencies involved with library grants.

This specific web site "OpenCarry.org" is the site I tried to access. "OpenCarry.Org" is on the BARRACUA ban list.

If any of you have encountered this on your own or if you do encounter software blockage such as BARRACUDA while using public library facilities it would be appreciated if you were to advise me as I am preparing an action against the library staff and all involved, specifically those individuals employed at the Federal level and State level involved with the funding of such software.

Welcome to someone else's internet. They have a internet filter that blocks certain programmable URLs. Pitch a gentlemanly fit and see if they change their settings or add an exception for OCDO.

Lawsuits? If you have the time...

They're the same chuckleheads who used to advertise on talk radio, a content filter for religious fundamentalists afraid that they'd INTENTIONALLY look at porn.

Anybody dumb enough to not be able to defeat their own content filter is too dumb to find porn in the first place.

Ok I'll bite ... tell us how to "defeat" BARRACUDA ... when the hardware and software is in another room, off-limits to the library users.

I'd start with something simple, check to see if they're doing IP filtering and then use the ip address instead of URL. Alternatively, if you have enough access (probably not at most libraries), use OpenDNS as your preferred provider.

More advanced is to create an http tunnel over ssh to a remote server and set up a SOCKS proxy that you redirect traffic through.

Ok ..Fine ... now

How do you get the "IP" address as opposed to the "URL"?

A "... gentlemanly fit" didn't work and typical of most self-anointed Brahaman usually litigation or a good ass kicking is what does work.

As for lawsuits ... I have the time ... I have the skills and I have the will.

Public libraries cannot ban access to internet content. It's a First Amendment issue.

How far they can go with requiring "registration" or other schemes that have a "chilling effect" remains to be seen.

whois, nslookup, ping, remote ping, pen and paper from another location

It seems you think it's impossible because you can't do it.

Between you and that guy "jackhouse" I don't know who's worse with the "cryptic" replies ... try putting your answers into E N G L I S H so I and the other computer dummies can understand what the devil you're talking about.

Different products and different issues.

The product they were advertising on the radio ran on the user's PC.

If you're too dumb to kill something you installed YOURSELF, I doubt there's much use for the product in the first place.

You might want to do some research into case law ... you may find it interesting - as well as frightening. Lawyers are not as intelligent as they would have you believe.
