Traveling To Through Nevada

I have a Florida CCP. I also live in Colorado, where we have reciprocity.
I am traveling to Las Vegas for three days. I am driving to Las Vegas through Colorado, Utah, and Arizona (all have reciprocity). My problem is what happens when I get into Nevada and Las Vegas. I have tried to read all the laws and posts. I understand I can drive through Nevada and what is required. But, what if I stop in Nevada for three days and then return to Colorado.

Then we will hope you have had a good time and dropped lots of your money here.

I'm not sure what you're asking concening three days. You can open carry here if not allowed to conceal.

You may want to look at this thread: http://forum.opencarry.org/forums/showthread.php?45415-Nevada-(Open)-Carry-Pamphlet

Or read my short version:
---------------------------
Nevada law (IANAL):
Nevada is a defacto open carry state and you may open carry if you choose. If you open carry in the high traffic tourist areas of Las Vegas you may have a visit from Metro or, Casino personnel may/will ask you to leave the property if you open carry in any casino. If anyone in authority in any private establishment asks you to leave you must leave under Nevada's trespass law.

There is no restriction on having a firearm in your car, open or concealed as long as it is not concealed on your person (unless you have a permit).

There is statewide preemption, but the Attorney General, on her web-site indicades that she may not think it applies in all cases.

http://ag.state.nv.us/about/faqs/firearms/carry.htm

If you have a permit that is valid in Nevada:

Out of State Carry Concealed Weapon Permit Recognition

*Effective July 1, 2012

In accordance with NRS 202.3689 (effective October 1, 2007) the State of Nevada will recognize the following States' CCW permit holders:

Alaska
Arizona*
Arkansas
Kansas
Kentucky*
Louisiana
Michigan
Missouri
Nebraska
New Mexico
North Carolina
Ohio
Tennessee
Rhode Island
South Carolina - Effective July 1, 2012
West Virginia

This law allows holders of valid permits from these states to carry a concealed weapon while in the State of Nevada. The permit must be in the possession of the issue at all times while carrying a firearm.

** NEW ** CCW Press Release re: S. Carolina Recognition

Nevada Department of Public Safety

NRS: CHAPTER 202 - CRIMES AGAINST PUBLIC HEALTH AND SAFETY

-----------------------------

You may carry concealed in Nevada ANYWHERE except:

Buildings at the airport,
Schools (including colleges) and child care facilitys,
Public buildings (that means Government buildings) that are posted or have metal detectors.

NRS: CHAPTER 202 - CRIMES AGAINST PUBLIC HEALTH AND SAFETY

That includes casinos, bars, clubs, restaurants, whorehouses (they are legal in parts of Nevada), ANYWHERE. They may ask you to leave for any reason, or no reason at all, and, under Nevada's trespass law, you must leave.

You may drink while carrying. The BAC limit is 0.10 (DUI is 0.08, when they lowered it to get federal highway money they did not change the limit for CCW).

NRS: CHAPTER 202 - CRIMES AGAINST PUBLIC HEALTH AND SAFETY

-------------------------------------------------

I hope this clears up any questions. Nevada laws concerning weapons are, for the most part at NRS 202.253 through 202.369.

Have fun in Nevada. Bring lots of money.

I doubt this will be an issue during the original posters visit, but the only colleges off limits are those that are part of the NSHE. Privately funded/owned/operated colleges like ITT tech, Le Cordon Bleu, Art institute, etc. are all legal to CCW.

Okay. Thanks for taking a lot of time answering my question. I'm still a little confused. I know I cannot carry concealed. I'm not going to open carry. I know when I cross the state line into Nevada I will have taken the handgun and locked in a gun vault chained inside the car. Now, I have to get into the hotel. I don't want to leave the handgun in the car. I can't concealed carry and I can't put it in my suitcase. So, do I have to leave it in the car?

I have been a big supporter of Nevada for a long time (since 1974 actually).

I know I cannot carry concealed. I'm not going to open carry. I know when I cross the state line into Nevada I will have taken the handgun and locked in a gun vault chained inside the car (unloaded). Now, I have to get into the hotel. I don't want to leave the handgun in the car. I can't concealed carry and I can't put it in my suitcase. So, do I have to leave it in the car? Or, is there some way I can take it into the hotel and lock it in the room?

IANAL but I would believe that if you're realistic about your carry, you'll be fine. If you don't want to leave in the car, unload your pistol, place the pistol and magazine in seperate parts of your suitcase, and I don't believe anyone will hassle you. Hell, no one will know you have it anyways.

We have some very strange laws here in NV. One of which is if you have it in a container of any kind, loaded or unloaded and it is upon your person, you are conceal carry and in violation of the law. Now, having said that, when we locals take a handgun into a police station here in Clark County to have it registered, the cops demand that we have it unloaded in a container of some kind. The point is, the cops don't know it's technically illegal.

I would not leave my firearm in a vehicle. I would just stuff it in my bag and take it to my room, but that's me. Then again I would not feel safe leaving it in my hotel room either. So as you can see, I'm completely conflicted.

truthfully, If you have it in a case designed for a firearm within your luggage, though technically illegal you're unlikely to have any trouble. You, as an american citizen have the right to transport your firearm from any place you may legally posses it to anywhere you may legally posses it. cars are burglarized a lot here in Vegas, especially out of town cars. I never recommend leaving one in your car.

You do not have to have the gun unloaded in a safe in your car in NV. It can be anywhere in the car, concealed or not, loaded or not; just not concealed on your person.

It has not been enforced as a violation of a concealed weapon if you were to transport an unloaded handgun from your car to your residence in a box or bag. They know it is an oversight in the law.

Everyone has been great in providing me with excellent advice. I agree that it is a bad idea to leave it in the car even in a gun vault that is secured. That can be compromised. I also agree that carrying a concealed weapon from one state to another is not illegal if stored properly. New York City is a good example where many law abiding citizens got arrested for doing what's right including notifying the authorities; only to get themselves arrested...

I'm going from Colorado to Nevada and back to Colorado. I guess I could bury it along the way somewhere in Utah...lol.

I will be sure it is unloaded and secured in my suitcase with handgun and mags in two separate places. Gun Vault will be in my suitcase. Nobody knows it's there. I will lock it all in the safe in the room as well and I surely won't be carrying it around town.

Thanks again.

What do you have against open carry? Just curious.

"Notifying the authorities" as being "right" is just another thing that wrong with them.
