"RAINSVILLE — The Rainsville City Council on Monday night passed an ordinance making it unlawful for anyone other than a police officer to carry a firearm while attending a council meeting or a meeting of any committee or other board appointed by the council.

City attorney Jayson Carroll said the motivation was seeing citizens in other areas who would open carry a firearm at a meeting.

“I think it’s a good idea and will keep everything in order,” Councilman David Shirey said.

The ordinance piggybacks state code 13A-11-59, which states it is unlawful for any person, other than a police officers, to carry a firearm while participating in or attending any demonstration being held at a public place.

. . ."

Alabama preemption statute precludes such local hangun bans: http://smartgunlaws.org/local-authority-to-regulate-firearms-in-alabama/

Perhaps its time for some open carry at the next city hall meeting.

What a great time to pass such a law, right after the City of Hamilton has to suspend their own version: http://alabamaopencarry.com/forum/index.php?topic=4142.0.

At first I was annoyed, but I realize that these towns are simply allowing us to make examples of them. Defeating these new laws gives us momentum to attack the old ones that are still on the books as well. Before long, few police chiefs or city council members will be brazen or stupid enough to violate preemption.

So what's the latest on this? Anyone carry to a council meeting? If so, what happened?
