"The Mesa County District Attorney's Office is deferring prosecution after a 65-year-old man signed a contract promising to take a gun safety class after causing a panic at Grand Junction High School while carrying a gun on his hip. District Attorney Pete Hautzinger says the man also agreed to 48 hours of public service and promised to write a letter of apology to staff and students.

According to the Grand Junction Daily Sentinel, the incident on Aug. 29 forced the school into a lockdown while police checked out the situation.
Hautzinger declined to identify the man."

Any idea what happened? If someone knows him (or can do a public records request) maybe he needs to be introduced to OCDO.

Gun safety != legal gun carrying

What was he doing that caused the panic? Just being there? Or was he actually doing something UNSAFE?!

Who is going to teach this class, and with whose syllabus?

Here's a longer article.

Sounds to me like he needs a better lawyer. Or he's just pleaing to get it done with. They charged him with possessing a weapon on school grounds. However, he was not on school grounds. Maybe it's me, but I've never heard of cycling by on the sidewalk being "school grounds". Secondly, he is a CHP holder so he's exempt from the GFZ.

He was on a sidewalk riding his bike. He tucked his shirt in because his pistol was chafing his back. Exposing the handle. The children panicked and the school called the police. By the way the kids noticed him as they wre doing gymnastics after school hours. Anyways the kids noticed him as he was passing by. Cops came ignored the laws charged him. No pas no don't collect $200. He's being and I quote @being made an example of" as in the law does not count in this situation.

Pete Hautzinger. If you want a corrupt POS prosecutor, he's it. AND YOU CAN TELL HIM I SAID THAT, TOO! Lord knows I've been right in his office at the Mesa County Courthouse telling him that. Oh, wait. It wasn't him I told that too, I told his receptionists and the deputies before they escorted me out because Pete Hautzinger is a gutless coward and he had to hide behind locked doors. :cuss:

Yeah... Here in Virginia I ride my bike past schools near my house often, never had an issue, nor can they "legally" make an issue of it unless they are willing to settle some hefty lawsuits afterward.

Looks like this guy maybe didn't know the laws well himself and his lawyer doesn't either. Shame.
