    Cabela's Union Gap--observed OC interaction

I was down at the new Cabela's in Union Gap the other day checking out the store. I saw something on the gun counter that I think the members of this forum would in interested in.

First off, the gun counter was nearly wall to wall people. I was at the handgun section when 2 OC's worked their way up to the glass--about 4'-6' from me. There were 2 gun clerks right in front of them; one of the clerks immediatly saw that they were open carrying. The taller clerk got a bright smile on his face, congratulated the two for open carrying, then told them that 'they get a style point for that'. The clerk then gave them each a fist bump. I grinned at all this.

It appeared from the conversation that followed that they all knew of this forum.

That's all I have to share.

Very cool to see some sort or positive acknowledgment to OC.

Let that be a lesson on how to reach gun counter when there is a long line , which seams to be always.

I can see it now. A specially decorated/engraved/inlayed pistol and hand tooled holsters to wear while shopping at Cabela's. A companion to the Texas Barbecue Gun.

The Lone Rangers rig would cover the BBQ, the Soviet is a "gift" piece, and the MP5 would be my personal favorite. I just need to find a holster for it.

Last weekend on Sunday I took the wife shopping at the premium outlets by the Tulalip Casino. Stopped into the Cabela's there afterward and saw a guy OCing, no one gave him any trouble.

Stopped to talk to him and referred him to the website.

I OC in the Cabela's in Grand Junction CO all the time; the only time an employees said anything it was "Excuse me sir. Cabela's supports Open Carry but if you are going to be trying holsters or anything we ask you bring it in unloaded".

I said "If I were doing that it would be unloaded and in at least a gun rug".

He said "Thanks for that. Some people....."

I was shopping at the Union Gap Cabelas today and noticed at least 8 people open carrying around the store. One of the guys was carrying a large semi-auto handgun on a thigh holster: what was interesting is that it had an ~8" suppressor on the end of it. I had never seen that before.

Glad you observed positive reactions. I recently worked in Yakima and would frequently go to Cabelas while OCing and I never had any problems!

I was almost showed the door at the Tulalip Cabelas by an uninformed employee. I insisted on talking to his manager. The manager quickly instructed the employee that WA was an OC state and ok to remain in the store.

Also, I've never had problems at the Lacey Cabelas.

The only policy is for guns/bows being brought in for service, or accessory sizing. They will clear the gun/bow, and escort you to the proper department. They follow state law. I, and numerous other people I know have had no issue in the Lacey one.

Was in the Tulalip Cabela's Sunday, and they've placed a check-in at the entrance for those that are having their firearms serviced, etc. Not a huge crowd around the handgun counter, even though they had the DMV number-calling tags out. Lots of folks in the ammo section, though. .223 was in stock. Absolutely no 9mm, very little .40 or .380. .45 was about $.90/round, iirc.

I remember that conversation as well. It was at least 2 to 3 years ago. They must have changed their attitude.

The Tullallip Cabela's has had the check-in stand since their opening.

Have never had any problems with OC at the store.

I remember that too, I think it was resolved through corporate, and was a misunderstanding by employees.

I was in the Tulalip Cabela's one day, wearing a khaki shirt and my Sig. Customers in the Reloading section kept asking me questions about product and pricing.

I told them I didn't work there, just a customer. After about 4-5 of these encounters a 'real employee' heard it and said "you can tell the employees from customers wearing khaki shirts. The employees are not allowed to carry"

What I find funny is that someone open carrying a firearm can go in and buy a rifle but they have to have an "Orange Shirt" carry it out for them.
