Costco unfriendly to OC

I was traveling across the state and went into a Costco in Wenatchee. Showed ID upon entering as required and when I was in the middle of the store, a tall chicken neck supervisor came up to me and said I could not carry a pistol there. I said that as a concerned and legal citizen (not many in Wenatchee) I am cognizant of the law that OC is legal in our state and that I saw no posting to the contrary outside the building.
He said that it is posted, that it is their policy and that it is private property. I said then I have no argument with you and will remove the weapon.
Upon re-entering the Costco store I looked again for signage at the entry point, THERE WAS NONE. I approached the same man who was checking Membership ID at the door and pointed out what had just happened. He knew as they are in radios and he was the one who contacted management. You have a copy shop and sign shop here in the store, why don't you people post this if it is your policy or maybe you just like making a scene with your unsuspecting customers. He whimpered and offered nothing productive to the conversation so I left it alone.
I will contact Costco corporate management for clarification to see if in fact this is a system wide corporate policy or just some local chicken neck flexing his assumed authority.

Costco understands some people may not like the policy, thus they will refund your membership fees. Contact customer service if you don't want to continue your membership for a complete refund.

If I recall, it was in the terms that you signed when you obtained your membership.

Do a quick search as it was been discussed before. Sorry but they got ya on this one.

They don't post a sign because they KNOW people are carrying concealed, and even though they will still hassle you (or call the cops to come shoot you, like they did for Erik Scott in Las Vegas) if they find out about it, they also will gladly take your money when they don't know about it at that particular time.

Some people here think it's fine to give them more money, even though they are VERY CLEAR that they do not want guns in their store and will ask you to leave if they see one. Many of us have taken them up on their offer of getting a full refund of our membership dues. This has the benefit of telling them WHY they lost our residual money.

Some here feel they have no cost-effective alternative. And some just don't care if they support Costco. Everyone has to make their own decision for their circumstances.

Costco has learned that most people will take their gun to the car and come back to shop, or will conceal and shop anyway. Costco is winning.

There is no need to contact corporate, Costco policy is to ban firearms. They are a PRIVATE business and make their own rules. I'm sure someone has a copy of the policy floating around here somewhere.....

When I got my COSTCO membership in 2009 it wasn't in my agreement. I still have it and have read it several times.
When I started OC'ing in 2011 I found out about COSTCO's Anti-Gun policy. I made the choice to let it expire and got a Sam's Club Membership.

To the OP;

It is private property. They make the rules. Either CC or give your money to another business. Please don't request the presence of signs.

PLEASE stop suggesting no firearms signs next thing you know they will be everywhere. If you are confronted and asked to leave or put your firearm in the car simply make up your mind if you are going to leave or put the gun in the car. Arguing with COSTCO is not going to help and can only hurt OC they have made up their mind.

BTW if you are filling a prescription, glasses count, or purchasing alcohol only you do not need a COSTCO card by federal law they must allow you in. You can not purchase anything else BTW. I went to COSTCO to purchase alcohol for a conference I attended in Sept. I was escorted from the entrance to the alcohol, to the checkout register and to my car. Since I was in Kalifornia at the time I was not carrying. It was kinda fun to make them jump through the hoops after the door person got nasty with me.

Actually, Costco Corporate policy is to allow local management decide what they want to do. there is a management letter out there(for management, not general consumption, it specifically states "do not post") but it also basically allows local managers to prohibit carry if they wish...they do not have to, but they may.

Costco does not want to alienate a lot of gun owners, that is why they do not post. Most people CC, and then it is not a visible problem.

Personally, I do not shop at Costco anymore.

One area I think everyone agrees on here in this sub-forum is that PRIVATE property means the private party gets to set the rules on their property. Costco is such a private party.

Signs in Washington have no force of law, except the over 21 posting for bars. Most of us like this, that way a human being has to interact with us to begin the trespass process (exceptions for folks served with legal papers, etc.)

In the three years you have been a member here, I expect there have been at least a few threads about Costco, their "policy" is old news.

... the mods should create some sort of algorithm that automatically bans for a week anyone who posts about Costco in the Washington forum. This horse ain't just dead, it's getting all bloated & runny. :eek:
