So I suddenly got hit with variations of this from several different friends:

Once again...people can't read.

S 265.20 Exemptions.
a. Sections 265.01, 265.02, 265.03, 265.04, 265.05, 265.10, 265.11,
265.12, 265.13, 265.15 and 270.05 shall not apply to:
1. Possession of any of the weapons, instruments, appliances or
substances specified in sections 265.01, 265.02, 265.03, 265.04, 265.05
and 270.05 by the following:
(a) Persons in the military service of the state of New York when duly
authorized by regulations issued by the adjutant general to possess the
same.
(b) Police officers as defined in subdivision thirty-four of section
1.20 of the criminal procedure law.

um, based on what's pictured, technically it means ALL firearms are banned, not just handgun style firearms. notice the definition of firearm beyond the highlighted: including pistol/revolver, shotgun, rifle...

Same deal. There's an exemption for people who have properly licensed their rights.

so I assume that means ALL firearms have to be registered? any possession of ANY firearm that isn't registered is classified as criminal possession of a firearm?
So if I go visit my family in Rochester and bring my Remington Wingmaster 870 to do some clay pigeon shooting, I would be in criminal possession of a firearm?

I haven't studied the law in detail to know the ins and outs. I just looked when someone said everything was going to be illegal even for cops.

265.00 defines a firearm as a handgun, rifle < 16" or shotgun < 18" (barrel lengths).

The other section says possessing one is a felony.

Another section specifies that you are exempt if you're a cop, military, licensed, etc.

NYC still has registration of everything.

What _does_ need to be fixed in the law is currently cops will _not_ be exempted from the 7 round limit...but they'll fix that before it takes effect.

IANAL, I am not (and never will be) a New Yorker, YMMV, etc.
