What a joke. The wife bought a Taurus .38 ultra lite the other day so I go today and walk in gun in case, stopped to check it in like sign said. This was ASAP at the front door not 10 feet in. I open case show the lady it's empty. I also am carrying my Springfield XDM 40 with a 16 round mag in it. She ask's is that loaded? I said why yes, she say's you'll have to unload it as well. I said do you really want me to unchamber a around right here in the store? She looks at me stupid like so I proceed to drop mag, point gun at floor rack the slide eject round and load it back into the magazine. Now here's the STUPID part or one of the stupid parts. I stick the full 16 round mag in my front pocket and walk back to the gun counter. I walk to the gun counter with a lil blackhawk Serpa that supposed to work and the young counter (boy) say's oh that's not gonna fit, I was like you kidding...Duh. He then say's did you walk back here by yourself? I said yes just like the lady at the front desk told me too. He then call's another escort (boy) to walk me to the front of the store while he carried my cased .38, I told him did he realize I have a Holstered .40 on my hip (was open carrying) and a 16 round mag in my pocket, and he was carrying a gun with no rounds at all? He then realized how stupid their procedure was and I just shook my head. I told him I wouldn't be back want happen again....He just gave me a look of I'm an idiot(him) I just laughed and walked out....Amazing the stupid rational of some store policies?????????????????

Strange. I have never been asked to unholster or unload my weapon here (Montgomery, Alabama) at the Academy Sports. They do escort you to the front if you buy a weapon and I'm not sure what that is all about.

The folks at the Academy Sports here have said that it is corporate policy to go by state law. I do think the lady you encountered is confused concerning what she had you do.

Best advice: Go back and speak to a manager and/or get the district manager's contact info.

just a week ago I walked in wearing my black back brace and open carrying my .40 cal(looked like body armor) as I had back surgery 2 days after Christmas and no one said a word. I just walked in like any other customer even going to the gun counter and looking for some rounds. I just happened to see a sign to the effect of all guns blah, blah, to the gun counter please check in, and as i was carrying the .38 in it's hard case I stopped. I think I will call tomorrow and talk to the store manager.

You should have escorted her to the front door and showed her the sign that says lawful open and concealed carry are permitted per state law. It's right there on the door with the sign about bringing unloaded guns in for service. I OC'd in there last week and nobody said a word. Honestly, I'd go back and speak with someone about it. Their company policy is pro carry. You just managed to find a clueless employee, or 2.

BTW, if you need a holster PM me. I've been making holsters for about a year now. Hybrids and leather.

UPDATE: I did call back and talk with the store manager and explained what had happened. He did state they allow open carry loaded firearms and that the employee was wrong in her procedure. He was very polite and apologetic and said he knew which employee I was referring to and he would go right now and inform her of her mistake and explain the law to her. I said no harm no foul and just wanted everybody to be on the same page....
