Earlier this month, Emeryville, Calif. Police Chief Ken James argued that a gun is not a “defensive weapon” but rather an “offensive weapon used to intimidate and used to show power.”

He has a friend in Salt Lake City Police Chief Chris Burbank.
But open-carry is different, he adds. For example, a law enforcement officer openly carries a weapon for its “intimidation factor. In law enforcement, that’s the message you send.”

Intimidation. Fear. A Show of Power.
These are the police that are there to protect you. These are the reasons why they say they are carrying guns.

So the police can intimidate and we cant or is the police intimidated by us open carrying? Its all about the law enforcement ego!

From the quotes it would appear that "intimidating the public" is just good police work. However, someone without a shiny badge carrying a firearm for protection is perceived by some officers as either trying to "intimidate the public" which is just wrong, OR, they don't appreciate the fact that you are no longer dependent on their largesse for your protection.
