Fool covered in red, white, and blue: "This country is great because it has granted us so many rights in comparison to what other countries have granted their citizens!"

Truth: Governments don't grant rights. Rights are pre-existing, natural, inherent properties of being human (if you're a theist, you may claim that they come from your deity). Some governments have had periods of doing a relatively respectable job respecting these rights, but the U.S. government, for the last several decades has done a piss poor job respecting these rights. Furthermore, blind submission to a symbol of authority (e.g., the flag of any particular government), is antithetical to the spirit of liberty. It is very ironic that worshippers of such an allegedly free country so drastically undermine their own point.

A libertarian blogged recently about the irony of millions enduring gate-rape at airports today while enroute to celebrate freedom.

Indeed, along with DUI check points, back pack inspections at parks. etc.

The cost today alone to the tax payers could feed the nations poor for a year or more.

All in the name of security and public safety. Our rights are being slowly stripped each and everyday.

The problem is that 80% of the citizens 14 years old and older have zero clue about what Independence Day actually represents. Nor do they care to know, and that my friends is a sad commentary for future Independence Days and the state of our country.

Facts tend to be unoriginal. Kinda makes them banal, but no less true.

In this thread, that fact was kinda in need of stating. That it was brushed off as a banality illustrates that it warranted posting.

We celebrate our throwing off of a government and the God-given (or natural, if you prefer) Right of the People to consent to a government or to withdraw that consent. God bless the men with the stones to withdraw that consent.

Your pedantery is showing.

While the "Fool" may not be as "up" on the source of his rights as you, he does get the important point, America is the best country to live over any other country. The evidence to confirm my claim that America is the best country to live in is that you seem to continue to live in America.

" Police were investigating what led to the explosion, but said early indications show a platform designed and built to hold the fireworks gave way. "For some unknown reasons the structure that holds these ordinances collapsed and caused them to be firing into the crowd," said Simi Valley police Cmdr. Stephanie Shannon." http://apnews.myway.com/article/20130705/DA7B9J800.html

The word is ordnance(s), military equipment, especially weapons and ammunition. The paramilitarization stinks deeply.
Off topic.

Independence Day IRONY abounds

A Song of Peace: art101.com http://www.art101.com/peace/peace.mp3

THIS IS MY SONG

This is my song, O God of all the nations,
A song of peace for lands afar and mine.
This is my home, the country where my heart is;
Here are my hopes, my dreams, my holy shrine;
But other hearts in other lands are beating
With hopes and dreams as true and high as mine.

My country's skies are bluer than the ocean,
And sunlight beams on clover-leaf and pine.
But other lands have sunlight too and clover,
And skies are everywhere as blue as mine.
Oh, hear my song, O God of all the nations,
A song of peace for their land and for mine.

My country, 'tis of thee,
Sweet land of liberty,
Of thee I sing.
Land where my fathers died,
Land of the pilgrims' pride,
From every mountainside,
A song of peace.

Hi Nightmare

Good job. Are you planning a civil action?

Best regards.

Are we the best just because the rest are just a little more worse than we are?

We could be great, let's stop jingoism and nationalism and recognize were we suck and work at bettering that.

We are the best country to live in by any reasonable measure even with our faults. Blaming America for our ills is like blaming the flat tire for driving over the nail.

Find another country that is better and then we can discuss why America sucks, I'll wait.

There may be a better country there may not be that doesn't matter.

I don't blame America, I blame the government. I get along with people fairly well.

The point is we have deteriorated greatly, the limitations of the consitution means nothing to the fed gov. so compared to what our government can be it is crap, just because it's crap is the best smelling crap still doesn't make it something other than crap.

How do we stop this?, one way is to stop nationalistic jingoism, hiding the ills of our country behind....well it's still better than the others.

I love PARTS of America but many parts of America are just horrible.

I have traveled to many countries in the world.

Personally, I think Australia and Canada are MUCH better than many parts of America. I lived in Australia for 12 months (until they kicked me out)

If I was kicked out of America I wouldn't mind living in Australia. In fact, I applied to live there before and they denied me.

I have traveled a lot in the Pacific (Tahiti, Fiji, Cook Islands) and I wouldn't mind living there.

I have family that lives in China. Although China isn't my cup of tea it has some very strong appeal and China is rapidly becoming a better place. A more free place.

America USED to be the best place to live in the world. It has changed though.

The government sucks and the population changed for the worse. America is not getting better. America is getting worse.

I grew up in California and it was the greatest place on earth until about the late 1970's. Today California is just a version of a nice neighborhood in Mexico.

I hope that you are not saying that the Liberty situation in Canada and Australia are better than in the US.

This from a guy who chooses to continue to live in California!

Here's a thought: Leave California and move to America.

Oh, and the cartoon up there is kinda stupid. The system in the cartoon wasn't "the best there is," at its time or any other.

Ours is. At least to people who love Liberty.

We have flaws. Serious ones. Work to fix them.

LOL.....Did they in the cartoon know there was a better system? The intention of my posting it was they believed their system to be the best, they were probably just as jingoistic as those who refuse to accept our system isn't the best not in the fact that it may be better in some aspects to other "systems" but it isn't the best the system in the fact that is has those serious flaws. ;)

I love my country. I served, as the Code of Conduct states it, "in the forces that guard our country and our way of life."

That said, I absolutely despise what our government, at almost all levels, has become. I believe that rattling noise you hear on days like Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Armistice Day (Veterans' Day) is the sound of those who gave all to protect what our Founding Fathers gave us rolling over violently in their graves.

We have been beset by office holders at many levels, and especially at the highest level, who are, if not Marxist, outright Socialists. We have masses who have made government handouts a way of life. Those who are supposed to be "peace officers" have adopted military equipment, tactics, and organizational structure.

One here mentioned living in China. I did for two months. While there, I attended a church service. Those in attendance were almost terrorized at the thought that the police might raid them at any time. Yes, it is an ancient and beautiful country. No, I would not want to live there. I've lived in countries from Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa. In none of them could I say what I thought of the government there without being subject to arrest. In none of them could I strap on a pistol and walk down the street. In one of them, I could not even worship my Creator openly without fear of arrest.

I'm an old man and, try as I might, I can't bring about a whole lot of change by myself. What I would love to know is what you younger men and women are doing to change what our government has become. Are you voting? Are you volunteering in the campaigns of those who would support the type of government we should have? Are you running for office yourself?

If you are doing none of these things, then you need to sit down and shut up because you, and others before you, have allowed our government to become what it is now by your inaction.
