Well, I have been a visitor for a little while now. And I have just signed up. I have handled handguns and rifles all my life but I haven't really owned any until the last few years.
A friend of mine got me really thinking after Sandy Hook. He always open carries. If he isn't headed to base or will be going to base then he has it on him. We had talked and talked about recent events and how it was all going to affect gun laws. I have never been one for restrictions on guns and I never will be. But after seeing the knee jerk reactions and seeing people talk about gun control instead of criminal control I decided to do something about it.
I bought my first handgun. The first one I have ever owned. I do have a mossberg for home protection. But what about when I go out? What can I do to protect myself and others if another nut job pops up.
I don't know if its the media, I don't know if it is an increase in idiots giving lawful gun owners a bad name, I don't know why there seems to be a lot of shootings at a time. Or if there really is.
I will say it again. I bought my first handgun. I traded in my Ruger Carbine .40 S&W for a Sig Sauer P229 .40 S&W. I use a 9mm S&W M9 in the navy and it it just doesn't seem to have the punch and weight that I am looking for. Thats why I stuck with the .40 caliber.
I have open carried for the last two weeks on several occasions. I have started out small and quite honestly I am still a little nervous. Not about the weapon itself, I am very comfortable when it comes to firearms. I am nervous about peoples reactions and what they will do. For the most part I have seen little fear from people. I got a direct question from a young man getting out of his car on whether I was going to shoot him. I calmly stated that I wasn't and that I had it for my protection as well as his. I shook his hand and left. I did that to hopefully teach at least him and his friends that those with guns are nothing to fear.

I thought I would just get a few thoughts out there (as jumbled as they may be).
