Cop unions are a large part of why cops have almost no accoubtability in this unfree country. Establishment Republicans rightfully condemn union thuggery and yet praise cop union thuggery. Why are they such evil hypocrites?

Putting thuggery aside, it isn't conducive toward being "fiscally conservative" either, violent crime has dropped tremedously, yet we see steady (if not massive) increases in funds, police and policing.

CBAs are a vital part of ensuring that union dues flow into the union coffers. Please focus your ire on public sector unions. To your main point, the cop union is the last step, not the first stop, when a wayward cop must answer for his waywardness. When all there is left is the union the cop has already been held unaccountable by the state. The rest is a money thing.

Just a wild guess/question, but could they not say that the reason violent crime has dropped is because of the increase in manpower, equipment, and training?

I'm not taking sides, merely musing.

They would like to take credit for that but no, Violent crime has been on a decline for the past several years and even went on a decline in Seattle when they did a rare cut buck in policing several years ago. It makes no sense to cry out to steal more taxes because of horrible crime when statistically the crime is not as bad as it was last year.

The economist in the book Freakonomics seem to think there is more correlation to Roe v Wade. Not sure if I totally buy that cause and effect rational but they do make a good argument.

Many countries that are a higher degree of a police state than ours have more violent crime.

Of course you need an armed military regiment in every town to kick out hippies from a park, and raid a home for overdue books......
