A tip for us foia inclined folks -- how officials hide records (or try to)

Gov't officials constantly use their personal devices to do gov't business. And sometimes for the expressed reason of hiding the activities from the public by hiding the records produced.

This would include: cops using cell phones, and other gov't officials using personal email accts.

I have discovered many legislators using personal email accts. Once they do, then those accts become subject to a FOI request or to be part of a FOIA request.

I always include a note that the request includes such personal email accts, cell phones etc.

Emails are not actually lost though .. the ISP or email service usually keeps these .. so its up to the official to pony up the costs to recover IMO.

Kinda funny, when hotmail.com was switching over to outlook.com and I noted several legislators using hotmail accts ... I zipped over and applied and got the new outlook.com email address of these politicians.

I am having so much fun ...
