On my way to the OC fest at the Morrow County Fair earlier this week, I needed to stop by my credit union. Usually, I go to the branch on base. However, as I was packin', it would be a violation of base regulations (and federal law) for me to go on base. So, for the first time, I went to an off-base branch. It would be silly to post a gun-buster sign on base, so they don't. Therefore, I never knew that Wright-Patt credit union will not allow me to both exercise my 2A Right and bank inside their buildings at the same time.

I know now. The off-base branch had a big-assed gun-buster sign on the door.

I almost did not make the meetup prior to the OC-at-the-Fair because I chose to spend an extra 20 minutes or so making the case to the branch manager for the credit union to respect our Rights on their property. She was totally blank throughout the convo. If there was a mind behind her eyes, I could not tell. I asked for a formal reply from either the CEO or the board of directors. I told her that if I did not get a reply within two weeks, or if a timely reply was that the no-guns policy stands, I would immediately withdraw my funds in favor of a Rights-neutral bank.

Chuck suggested Chase. I also want to check out Security National as I have a very wallet-friendly mortgage with them that was NOT farmed out to Fannie or Freddie. I don't know Security National's take on the RKBA.

So far, no word from WPFCU.

If they remain Rights-unfriendly, I recommend that all Liberty-lovers who are members withdraw their money. I am going to keep my share account with the minimum five dollars so I can attend meetings and keep the issue in front of the board.

Look at Huntington... every branch I've ever been in has bee cool... (even the one in canton with the double lock-out doors and bullet-proof glass around the tellers)

Ya know, a list of Ohio banks that don't prohibit the exercise of the Right on their property would be a good thing to give to the board at WPFCU, letting them know that such an enlightened view does not increase their risks at all.

So far:

Chase
Huntington

Any more?

My credit union is also posted. I have been milling over what action to take.

If this list of banks the support 2A is long enough it may be a good starting point.

Time to move on. We should not do business with folks who do not respect our law-abiding nature and prefer to only stop the law-abiding from carrying.

It is best if we build the list of banks that we know do not hassle carriers, but I am also going to create a list of banks that simply have no gun-buster signs.

PNC Bank does not post.
Vinton County National Bank does not post.

Ohio University DOES post.
Huntington DOES post, and the one next to the casino in Columbus also has the double-lockout door system. The tellers are on their own, however.

Some suggestions for conveying to the bank the idea of JUST how important firearms are to Ohioans...

  • Show this video to the bank board/management.

  • Point out that the PRO-gun side was an order of magnitude larger than the anti-gun side AND had less than 48 hours to organize AND had to handle a change of venue AND had to come out in the middle of a workday, not to mention the 90-degree sunshine. (Swiped most of these points from JustaShooter)

  • Remind them that 1 in 25 adults has a concealed handgun license. (Don't say CHL, say concealed handgun license. They need to hear that word 'license' often)
From 2010 US Census
Ohio population= 12 million
# 21 or older= 7.5 million
From Ohio Attorney General
# of licensees= (more than) 300,000
300,000 / 7500000 = 0.04 or 4% or 1 in 25

  • And, of course, remind them that the Bureau of Stuff to Bring to a Party...sorry, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives estimates there are 300,000,000 firearms in the United States.
If Ohio has 1/50 of those guns, that's 6 million for an adult population of 7.5 million. (don't bring up the 18-20 year olds)

That's an awful lot of people with guns that may not want to keep their money in that CU. Especially when you suggest to people affiliated with the NRA, BFA, OFCC, OCDO, OOC, NEO OC, USCCA, USACARRY and numerous firearm related Facebook groups and Twitter feeds that anti-gun Wright-Patt CU is the wrong place for pro-gun citizens to keep their accounts. Yeah. Mention THAT to the board as well.

My wife does her banking at Park National, which also does not post, and I do mine at PNC, which is very gun friendly, and as you said, Chase is also gun friendly

I like your idea of maintaining a minimum balance
Carry on, my friend,,,,

I questioned WPCU policy via email about 7 months ago. No response.

I carried at PNC yesterday. The lady behind me in line says, "I've never seen someone carry a gun in the open."

I said, "Are you afraid?"

She says, "No, I feel very safe."

We then had a nice discussion about guns and firearms training.

Kemba Credit Union, started for Kroger employees and since then expanded quite a bit, is not posted*. In fact they bought up the credit union I used to belong to, whose branches were never posted either.

* The downtown Cincy branch is located inside Kroger's HQ. The south end of the building, primarily where the worker drones enter, has a 'No guns' sign posted. At the opposite end of the building is a cafe and beyond that the Kemba branch. Door into the cafe and beyond is NOT so posted.

Also, the Blue Ash branch is inside a large Kroger food plant/warehouse. Some doors there are posted, others not. It is my understanding (and I have a letter from Kemba management someplace to confirm this) that they are okay with the bank customers carrying there, the prohibition is aimed at employees. (I'll save the windmill tilting on that discussion for another time.)

None of the other branches are posted in any way.

Not the most ideal conditions, but until these signage policies are no longer written by legal wonks dictated to by insurance company weenies, one thing I can do is visit the unposted

locations. Better still just use my ATM card.

Eye95, OFCC's forums are chock full of info on posted versus unposted businesses and such. That, if for no other reason, makes it a good info resource for me.

I would rather participate in OFUC, Ohioans for Unlicensed Carry. OFCC has bought into licensed carry, and I am against licensed carry.

Good luck in trying to get them to remove the NO Gun sign. I approached that question with them several years ago and ended up with a BS answer. Someone in Law enforcment advised the bank to place the signs up because that way if the bank was held up only the bad guys would have guns inside. That way they could spot their target. Blows my mind the way people think. Taking advise from law enforcement...the same people that will trample your rights.

I don't care if they do or they don't. I simply won't do business with them. There are plenty of other options.

Sheeple #1: "That guy has a gun and I know he didn't get a license OR a background check!"

Sheeple #2: "OFUC"
