I am interested in hearing opinions on The Pledge of Allegiance. Do you say it? Do you allow your children to participate in saying it?

In my case, I am thankful for the freedoms that been fought for by brave Americans throughout the history of this country, but I pledge allegiance only to God. Also, the Pledge was created in 1892 by a socialist named Francis Bellamy and I ain't a socialist, thank you very much! Keep in mind, 1892 was a long time after the birth of our country so the Pledge is not exactly straight from the likes George Washington. Another thing is that opting out of the pledge is actually more patriotic, as our Founding Fathers fought for freedom of speech and could be said to have been against compulsory unification of opinion.

What are your thoughts?

First, it's not a pledge to the President, it's
"to the flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands".
http://www.ushistory.org/documents/pledge.htm

And yes, I say the pledge, the non-religious (1923) version.
Generally it's once a month, at the opening of a meeting.

http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/allegiance

loyalty to a person, country, group, etc.
the fidelity owed by a ... citizen to a ... government
devotion or loyalty to a person, group, or cause

I see no conflict between loyalty to one's country and to one's imaginary friend.
In fact, many people here make a big deal over their loyalty to the USA, protect the Constitution at all costs, etc.

When I was a HS teacher, I got the Pledge reinstated at our school.

These days, I no longer fly the American Flag. The Republic for which it stands no longer is in operation. I fly the Gadsden Flag. If our Republic is ever restored, I will again fly its flag.

A few years ago I saw a video of a group of Black kids singing an 'ode' to obooba. Virtually identical to the children who sang a similar ode to Hitler. Until this pos is out of the 'white' house, this country will stay in the dump. "To the republik" should be the new spelling until we can take out the trash.

The Pledge of Allegiance is settle "law." No citizen is required to recite it....non-issue.

Not reciting can have serious social ramifications, however. Also, perhaps we should close down all the sub-forums for states in which OC is already legal because it is a "non-issue."

My wife has her own take on it, having grown up unwillingly Soviet, coupled with seeing the results of the "Great Patriotic War" with Germany. I have not for a great number of years felt any need to recite this pledge, nor do I feel any need for my children to do so. If they decide they wish to say the pledge, I will gladly sit down and educate them on the exact meaning and historical significance of the pledge and allow them to decide for themselves.

Hyperbole and deflection.

I guess if you call having mobs threaten your life, fear of being tarred and feathered and having to use shotguns to protect your family and friends "hyperbole", then so be it. But you might benefit from a little history lesson on the Jehovah's Witnesses (of which I am not one of btw) who found their world upside down because their children would not say the Pledge:

I refused to stand or recite the pledge at an athletic event. I felt some cold stares.

Serving in the Navy for 10 years now and these comments make me sick. I'm all for Freedom of Speech. Say what you want, do what you want but never disrespect the flag. I don't like Obama more than the next guy on here. But that Flag is a symbol.

It is a symbol of what we as individuals as citizens of the United States can be.
It is a symbol of those who paid the price for freedom in this country.
It is a symbol of what we once were and still go back to.

Turning your back on it means turning your back on the very ideals that made this country great.

Not standing during athletic events? Well I forgot that you're a nutjob and probably live in a hole making out with your sister because she's safe. Put your tinfoil hat back on zac and crawl back to whatever womb gave excruciatingly painful birth to your giant head full of air.

Oh and the picture posted by OP? That was actually how the flag was saluted back then before ww2. It was Hitler's regime that ruined that stance. During WW2 it was suggested that we place our hands over our hearts instead. Much like the swastika, its meaning was ruined by the Nazi's.

Please do not disrespect the flag. It is the very symbol of our bill of rights. The very symbol that we preach about every day on these forums. You cannot stand up for a right given and blessed upon you by our constituion and not support the very symbol that was carried, bled for, and died for those rights we hold so dear.

Thank you.

I did not turn my back on it. Your inability to understand what I said makes ME sick.

I love the Republic for which it stands. It just isn't around here right now. So I choose to fly the symbol of fighting to create it in support of the fight to restore it.

Oh, and I served in the Air Force for twenty years.

So don't play the I-am-more-patriotic-than-thou card. That is what is sickening.

I care far more about how people act than I do about some mindless, yes, mindless recitation of allegiance, especially when the first thing on the list is a symbol.

Lol. To me the flag is a symbol of devotion to the state and its matrix of propaganda and control, and I shall "disrespect" it every chance I get. Please quit "serving" me and get a real job in the productive sector. I didn't ask for your help and this country, nay, this world, can't stand more of the actions of the Empire's "service" men and women.

What he said was ugly, insulting others for their views. What you said is uglier and more hateful. Not you. What you said.
