Since the Mid 70s slasher films have been all the rage in the horror genre, movies like Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th, Last House on the Left, we've seen them all, of course every movie seems to borrow the same plot, and same story elements, sex=death, blondes die first, if you're a blonde young woman in a horror movie who has just engaged in sexual intercourse you and your boyfriend are both dead persons walking, everyone splits up, hides where they have no means of escape, no one ever owns a gun, and if you see a black character you know he's not going to last til intermission.*
Of course, Scream is one of those films, Directed by horror legend Wes Craven, Scream is a cinematic masterpiece that's both a serious slasher flick and a satire of slasher movies at the same time.
It was a dark and stormy night... well maybe not stormy, but definitely dark, and a 17 year old blonde cheerleader casey is getting ready to watch Halloween after setting popcorn on the stove. She gets a mysterious phone call, while she ignores it at first the call keeps coming, finally the caller begins quizing her on horror movies, when she doesn't want to talk she's ask to turn on the lights, doing so shows her boyfriend [strike]Mr.Red Shirt[/strike] Steve tied up on the back porch, she's asked to name the Killer in Friday the 13th, after incorrectly guessing Jason (Jason's mom was the killer in the original movie... duh) Steve is killed and Casey is chased out of her house before being killed and hung from a tree.
Naturally the town is quite shaken by the horrific crime, especially since it occurs one year from the anniversary of another murder of a middle aged woman, enter Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) the daughter of the previous murder murder victim, a socially conservative brunette who's not into hip culture and somewhat socially withdrawn and who seems to enjoy wearing men's sweaters 3 sizes too big, therefore making her an ideal candidate for horror film longevity. Sidney's father is leaving for a conference the next day, Sidney at first brushes off the crime, and heads home from school that day, and recieves a phone call asking her about horror movies and which ones she watches none really, they're all the same, some freak stalking some big breasted girl who can't act who's always running up the stairs when she should've gone out the front door it's insulting she playfully responds to the mystery caller, she's then attacked in her home by a Ka-Bar toting killer wearing a 5 dollar ghoul costume from Wal*Mart of course Sidney runs up the stairs and not out the door, although the killer took the phone in the kitchen off the hook, Sidney is able to barricade herself in her room and access 911 via the dial up internet connection the killer leaves and Sindey's boyfriend Billy arrives minutes later, and is arrested by the responding officers as a suspect in the attack.
However after initial evidence seems to prove Billy innocent Billy is released from jail and the whole town goes into Martial Law with the sheriff declaring a curfew and the teenagers of the town having a giant party in one house supervised by a policeman who could easily be a deputy in the Andy Griffith Show The real horror fest is set into play and it's up to Sidney to expose the real killers and foil their plans.
First hitting the silver screen in 1996, Scream has spawned 3 sequels. while it's easy to dismiss it as another unoriginal slasher flick, it gains originality in that all the characters are very aware of horror film cliches and either blow them off or make the same mistakes anyway, in many ways it's the perfect satire of a slasher film, while being a traditional slaher film.
unlike the previous media I've reviewed, not that many guns make their own into Scream, however Officer Barney is armed with a Beretta 92FS, after being stabbed Sidney ends up with the gun and uses it to dispatch the killer once and for all, and the county sheriff who makes two appearances appears armed with a Glock 17/22
For late night re-runs or a run to your local video store... oops I mean netflix, Scream is a classic that is sure to bring smiles to even the most cold hearted fans of the genre. Scream will also be running today and tommorow on AMC for fearfest.
