It is the Veteran that keeps the Constitution working

According to the media, 10% of the American citizens have worn “the uniform”.

To all who currently are serving their country in the military and to all who have served in the past, I thank you for your service and for protecting the country I love.

Take a minute and say a prayer for those that are still in Harm’s way. Not everyone can or is willing to sacrifice as our veterans and their families have in the past, and still do.

May God Bless you and watch over you.

Some have paid the untimate price.

All signed on to stand between those that would harm me and mine - they have my eternal thanks and respect.

They may be humble, yet should stand proudly........they have earned it.

All honor and glory is due them, not just today but every day.

Well, I got less bone in my body now than before ... but a minor issue...others have actual issues.

Nice to see politicians who want to strip out RKBA from vets.

I don't think vets should get any special consideration but to target their RKBA is outrageous.

I'm not happy with our military today in respect to our RKBA ... I don't see the military as our "friend" in this respect anymore. After 9-11 I have had US soldiers pointing their guns at me ...

I am profoundly grateful that I got my time in without combat.

My brother has done several combat tours since 9/11, and I think he retires this month. But between my spouse, me, my brothers and my brothers-in-law, we have about 95 years' service; add uncles and both father and stepfather who were Eisenhower 6-month-wonders (their term, not mine) and cousins, and we come closer to the century and a half. Military service is not easy, but I know those of us who thought short-notice deployments and unaccompanied tours were hell have it easy compared to those who face(d) combat. For the combat vet I am doubly thankful.

First, thanks to all who have served.

Wife & I went to the local Olive Garden to take advantage of their Veteran's Day Special (went last year, and it was good, even though there was a bit of a wait). They had a guy in the lobby handing out the "Special" menus to those who could prove that they were veterans. Now, I keep my DD214s in a safe deposit box, so I didn't have a chance to retrieve them. So we went anyway, since the OG folks took my word for it last year (I am an actual vet). This guy asked if I was former military, to which I replied I was, so he asked for my ID. When I told him that former military don't have IDs, he said "active and retired" do. My statements that neither of those groups are "former" military didn't seem to phase him. The hostess told us there'd be an hour and 40 minute wait, so we left.

Yes, I'm aware of the DMV "Veteran" ID card program. Not sure i would have been comfortable letting this guy peruse my DD214, though.

David,

I have a few broken bones to show for my time in the service. I have also been shot at more than once but never hit. For me, being in harms way was the rare exception. For those who have served in the last decade being out of harms way has been the exception not the norm. Please, if what you are implying is true or not, don't bad mouth todays soldier. Talk about specific acts but don't paint them with such an ugly broad brush.

I am asking you very politely.

A POEM WORTH READING

He was getting old and paunchy
And his hair was falling fast,
And he sat around the Legion,
Telling stories of the past.

Of a war that he once fought in
And the deeds that he had done,
In his exploits with his buddies;
They were heroes, every one.

And 'tho sometimes to his neighbors
His tales became a joke,
All his buddies listened quietly
For they knew where of he spoke.

But we'll hear his tales no longer,
For ol' Joe has passed away,
And the world's a little poorer
For a Veteran died today.

He won't be mourned by many,
Just his children and his wife.
For he lived an ordinary,
Very quiet sort of life.

He held a job and raised a family,
Going quietly on his way;
And the world won't note his passing,
'Tho a Veteran died today.

When politicians leave this earth,
Their bodies lie in state,
While thousands note their passing,
And proclaim that they were great.

Papers tell of their life stories
From the time that they were young,
But the passing of a Veteran
Goes unnoticed, and unsung.

Is the greatest contribution
To the welfare of our land,
Some jerk who breaks his promise
And cons his fellow man?

Or the ordinary fellow
Who in times of war and strife,
Goes off to serve his country
And offers up his life?

The politician's stipend
And the style in which he lives,
Are often disproportionate,
To the service that he gives.

While the ordinary Veteran,
Who offered up his all,
Is paid off with a medal
And perhaps a pension, small.

It is not the politicians
With their compromise and ploys,
Who won for us the freedom
That our country now enjoys.

Should you find yourself in danger,
With your enemies at hand,
Would you really want some cop-out,
With his ever-waffling stand?

Or would you want a Veteran
His home, his country, his kin,
Just a common Veteran,
Who would fight until the end.

He was just a common Veteran,
And his ranks are growing thin,
But his presence should remind us
We may need his likes again.

For when countries are in conflict,
We find the Veteran's part,
Is to clean up all the troubles
That the politicians start.

If we cannot do him honor
While he's here to hear the praise,
Then at least let's give him homage
At the ending of his days.

Perhaps just a simple headline
In the paper that might say:
"OUR COUNTRY IS IN MOURNING,
A VETERAN DIED TODAY."

Mainly because it is believed that veterans probably know how to effectively use weapons.

Not sure why you would have a concern about that, but the Veteran card has no information on it except for which branch you were in and your discharge date.

UGH! I HATE that...HATE HATE HATE the "Military discount" that only applies to Retired or Active. UGH! Plus, gotta say it, hate it when people thank ACTIVE duty on VETERANS day. It's VETERANS day.

*Rant Over*

I'm with you, we were glad to get the Virginia Veteran ID card so my husband didn't have to have his DD214, that's got WAY too much information to be having to show everyone just for a free meal. We went to Red Robin, asked specifically for the veterans meal, and when she brought the bill she STILL charged us, NEVER having asked for his ID. It's always frustrated me when my husband, who went to Iraq, only gets recognized with a measly $4 burger once a year. Not that active or retired aren't worth it, just frustrating.

Candy, I'm with you 100%,

I spent 12 years in the Navy including Desert Storm and Desert Shield. Hindsight being 20/20, I should have stayed for the other 8, but that's history.

I also dislike when ANYPLACE says they honor veterans but then limit it to Active Duty or Retired. (Colonial Shooting Academy is one such venue)
