Smelting Question

I've been gathering wheel weights, and had a question. I've used saw dust, that I got from Lowes, and all the video's I've watched, as soon as most people put the dust in the pot, it flames up. I mix it in, and it char's, but that's it. With me reading about tin separation, I wanted to make sure I was doing it correctly. Thanks guy's and gals for the input.
