A big thank you

I never really liked Texans, IMHO ya'll seemed to be the most conceded people in the Union but having to live with a guy from prosper and then the next room mate i had was from i forget were anyway you guys grew on me. I'm attending A&M college station after i separate from the Marine Corps in december of '14 and finishing up my degree in Petroleum engineering. When i called veterans affairs o about 15 days ago to figure out some last minute details about my gi bill and va student loans. I asked the lady about the gun policy on campus we talked for a little bit and she asked if i had a CCW for Texas I said i did not only for MN so she gave me the local sheriffs office number and got all the info sent in my packet for the CHL and guess what 14 days later got my CHL......fastest turn around time and 100% off since im active duty

Ive come to find that Texas loves their veterans (except for some of those liberal yuppies in Austin) You guys treat with the utmost respect and dignity. You also produced Kevin Fowler and Casey Donahew. Id like to thank the citizens of the republic of Texas for their support.

Right after the Civil War I think the members of the Confederacy were probably the most conceded people formerly in the Union, but as to whether Texans are as conceited as you think, I don't know.

When I was an instructor (AD Army) at Redstone Arsenal, we thought we were doing exceptionally well when we got the Marines to tie their shoes, zip up their pants, and sit in chairs. :lol:

Now that I have made the obligatory (for us Doggies) dig at Marines; Thank you, Marine, for your service, welcome back to civilian life next year, and good luck with your studies!

When I was in the Corps (WAAY Back) we were told all that was expected of Marines was to go to town, get drunk, get in fights and hit what we shot at :lol:

Yeah, my stepbrother, retired Chief Gunner's Mate (Guns), told me many stories of Marines going to town, getting drunk, and picking fights with sailors who cleaned their clocks for them. Being Army, I took those stories with a large grain of salt. I suspect it was more the other way around.

Mr. McBeth, this is a military discussion. The Air Force has little say in the matter. When I was stationed at Bitburg AB, Germany, the Air Force used to whine and cry because they had to work twelve-hour days when they went on alert and that never for more than five days. When the Army went on alert, it was normally a minimum of two weeks in the field, sleeping in tents (if you were lucky), and working twenty-hour days. That is not factoring in having to eat MREs (Meals Rejected by Ethiopians) for the time we were in the field.

And, yes, I know every Marine is a rifleman, but I still remember shooting circles around some former Marines with both M1 Garand and M14 rifles.:lol:

Now that I have the obligatory inter-service greeting out of the way I would like to share my favorite story on the subject. I worked in the nuclear industry for many years. The industry attracts a high percentage of ex military. It is common to stand around in small groups and kid each other about our branch of the service (like here). One ex-navy (I am too) used the wise crack about the Marine Corp being a department of the Navy because it says so right at the top of their checks. A former Marine without skipping a beat replied " Yeah, the mens department". I believe you could have heard a gnat fart at that moment. I loved it.

Before any of you civilians chime in on this; remember that we who have served, or are serving, are brothers and sisters. We are allowed to pick on each other. Outsiders do so at their own, very considerable, peril.

That said; Do you know why the Navy has Marines on board their ships?

While I agree somewhat the OP took a dig at Texans, in good humor though. Once you take a dig at people of a state, or group, your service does not matter, you are prey for the predator. But seeing Marines do get made fun of a lot, I am sure the OP understood what he was stepping into.

Marine thanks for your service to defend the freedom of our country, especially on the 72nd anniversary of Pearl Harbor Day. I never served but am deeply proud of the courage, gift of years of your life, and sacrifice of your family you gave to serve - including putting yourself at risk to give the ultimate sacrifice - given by so many that preceded you.

Texas A&M has graduated so many soldiers and officers that - as an alumni of UT Austin - I think A&M is the university in Texas that truly embodies the spirit of those men that fought at the Alamo, and Goliad, to help found the Republic of Texas. Of course those ideals were the same as what spurred Geo Washington and the original Tea Party to revolt - the struggle for freedom from tyranny and the right to exercise unalienable God-given rights, including the RKBA. As we now see, that struggle does not end.

Thanks for the info on College Station, since I graduated 30 years ago I assume you've benefited from the very improved boy/girl ratio and have met some cute - and smart - Texas girls?

Finally, I hope some of your Aggies from Texas let you know that Texas is a State of Mind - that of freedom (other than OC currently). As we Texans visit the states around this great country, we can see where taxes and government create sloth and dependence that hampers and as such dulls the dreams and aspirations of people - something which we jealously and loudly defend. I think our Governor and your fellow Aggie - Rick Perry portrays this - you folks from around the country might laugh and poke fun of his enhanced twang, but I think it was Will Rogers that said - 'It ain't braggin if you can do it'. And looking at the vibrancy of the Texas economy, that's a model citizens of other states in the Union might want to ask their politicians - 'Why don't we do that?'

No, we will not publish my home address for the benefit of those Marines who are now looking for me. As I used to tell my Marine students just at the point they were getting ready to lynch me, "Remember that I do not pick at nor joke with those I do not respect."

I wasn't going to keep pulling your finger. I always wondered until now why the Army issued velcro palmed gloves. Now I know. I have always got a kick out of the creativity that the individuals showed insulting the other services.

I was in a world class brawl once. It was in a bar in Hong Kong. There were a bunch of sailors from the New Jersey and various escort ships (my ship included) in what I would describe as close quarters. There were a few Marine linguist types on board with us and I believe were there (thus fulfilling your recipe for a good one). Words started being traded in one corner and pretty soon I saw a fist raised and swung. Then the whole room moved. What a night.

What I was referring to is the fact that the Marine Corps has no medical personnel, so the sailor among a group of Marines is probably the Corpsman (in the Army the medic). The guy who when the defecation hits the oscillator and everyone is behind the heaviest cover they can find, is up and moving to render aid to the wounded and maybe save a brother Marine's life.

About 8-10 of us were in a bar just outside of Charleston and a local must have thought he was safe picking a fight with the lone "swabbie" in the bar, he got to see the inside of an ambulance, that is if his eyes weren't completely swollen shut

I can put in my own i.v.'s when i drink thank you very much. And btw Navy Corpsman are hard as f*ck until its time to stand post then "but we're non combatants card" comes out as well as every Monday why didn't you get a haircut doc........"uhhhhh cause im not a Marine!"
