I was thinking of blinders horses are put on horses that only allow them to see the direction their handlers want them too. He has the ability to remove them but he is comfortable in his narrow prescribed view of the world around him.
A horse can see anywhere it can turn its head, but that requires more effort, and a dedication to want to seeing what they are hindered from seeing without more effort.
