When I see a rifle in a case I dont leap to explosives any more than if i found a band kids trombone...

Did they think of other SCARY things when they saw the big scary rifle? Sounds loony to me.

From the story it says that it wasn't in a gun case it was in some other shaped case, hence the gun taking it home who doesn't own any guns.

HE then called and somehow the word explosives got thrown around.

The resident who found the gun will not face charges, Jackson said.
What idiot would ask such a question?????

What idiot would even think that calling the police over a found a case that looked like a carrying case for a musical instrument is a crime?????

Wow, you guys are way downplaying this situation. Haven't any of your ever played Hitman? One should not be allowed to simply "carry a case around." There is no telling what kind of ghost-30-caliber-clip-magazine-3600rpm-death-machine could be concealed within.

Edit: "The bomb squad ultimately determined that the package was exactly what it appeared to be once it was opened: a rifle in a case, Jackson said." Wow. Now that's interesting. The gun-look-thing wasn't actually a bomb in disguise.

I understand that the case may have been oddly shaped enough that someone might think there's something else under padding or whatever, but seriously.. Unless there are red and blue wires running around, or batteries, or a timer or something, who thinks "oh this might be a bomb"

True dat…,

True, like when people could buy cars from the police seizure auctions. Sometimes the cars would still have drugs packed into doors and other places.

I bought a former police vehicle at a state police auction some years back, had an interesting item in it. Don't know who it belonged to before, but I know who it belongs to now. I guess the same guy that searches school buses for kids when they park them after they've made their stops, works for the state police too!

Yep, and if I remember correctly there was someone who bought a house found a hidden stash of child porn. Called the cops and then was arrested for possession of child pornography.

The f'd up thing is it would also have been illegal for him to destroy it because it is evidence of a crime.

Welcome to the police state USA!

I want to see the news story/court cases about that.....

the closest thing I can find from google searching is a burglar who found child porn in a house and tattled on the owner

I'd like to see the case too.

It is likely mythology based on an ounce of truth. I'll bet that someone, somewhere found some child porn and turned it in. They may have been threatened with arrest, or even arrested. I will be surprised if it ever went to trial. I cannot fathom a conviction. There would be an incredible lack of criminal intent. No reasonable person would call the act of trying to end an accidental possession an intentional possession.
