On the day of the incident, Merin said family members had called police. Shergill had gone to a local park, and was sitting on a bench near people practicing yoga. When police approached Shergill, he ran off, then turned around and stood about 20 feet away from police.

Merin quoted witnesses who said Shergill did not appear threatening and was not brandishing weapons of any sort.

Shot dead ... for what? Running away? Did not know that this was a summary execution offense.

Anyone who calls the police on a family member should realize the cops are not going to be there to help the member but to affect an arrest. Cops are not your babysitter.

so... 20 feet away and standing still, or 10 feet away and walking towards the police? no weapon or a knife?

2 minor discrepancies so far. we shall see...

The police say he had a knife and was coming at them... seems like if it was a park and people doing yoga.. there would be witnesses, but the person writing the article sure didn't interview anyone.

A throw down knife is usually MUCH less expensive than a throw down gun. Easier to afford on a cop's pay. Pax...

While true, let's not suppose facts not in evidence. Your implication may be right, may be wrong.

I will await further details.

Knee jerk reactions, from either side, are still not factual and lend a distorted/uniformed view to the events.

More details are needed.

I do get curious though if some who "brandish" are because suddenly there is an aggressive person with a weapon threatening their right to be left alone.

"Merin claimed that police barged into the Shergill’s home after the shooting, and took several items including Shergill’s diary, which they have not yet returned."

What are the odds that one of the items taken was a knife that can be traced back to the house?
