    Duct tape holsters

We've seen Duct tape accomplish some pretty darn impressive things: suspending cars, working as a rope bridge, building a functional sail boat. Now I've seen a shoulder holster entirely made from duct tape.

Remarkably this post was not inspired by the recent "budget holster" thread. My brother-in-law came over yesterday to show me his newly created holster. I believe he saw a how-to on Youtube and gave it a go.

He had a full size target .22 pistol in it, so it can hold the weight at least for a while. I wonder would this be a decent option just for fun? Could it work as a daily carry holster or range-only? Here's one that really got me why would you bother with a duct tape holster when a professionally made holster can be had for less than the cost of a box of ammunition?

excuse my typing. Typing on my phone is pretty bad.

    I too.

Duct tape is very tough when layered, I believe the was a myth busters episode where they made a boat out of duct tape. I would imagine in a pinch duct tape could be layered til very strong, then cut and sewed just like leather to make a temporary holster. But who would actually wear one in public?

I'll get a few pics for you guys. It may be this weekend before I get them up.

I don't think it was stitched anywhere. I think it was all just either layered or strips with the adhesive side facing inward leaving nothing sticky.

Was there any type of retention in holster?

That depends on whether the sticky part was on the inside... ;-)

Not on his. At least none that I noticed. I'm sure it would be easy enough to fabricate some type of thumb break or thumb loop.

The tape is layered sticky side against sticky side. Doing it this way makes it so that only the back side (non sticky) is exposed.

Also, I took some pictures of it. Hopefully I can get them posted up today.

Would love to see them, but with enough layers of good quality duct tape, wouldn't be more cost than a cheap blackhawk holster?

    Pics

As promised. Here are a few pictures. No expensive tape required. He just used "Duck" brand tape from Walmart. In one of the pictures you can see he made the chest strap where you can adjust it to fit. I imagine after a while you may have to replace that little piece.

That's my brother-in-law. Not me. That's pretty much typical of him. He's 18 though, so if he wants to look rough that's on him. My mother-in-law would NEVER let him go to town looking like that.

No offense, but it seems pretty poorly designed without something to hold the shoulder strap in place, especially with the added weight and swing of a firearm.

    I don't think I'll be making any.

When one can buy good nylon holsters from Uncle Mikes and other fairly cheap. Used ones at gun shows go really cheap.

Looks flimsy to me, maybe a lot more layers to get more sturdy product. Myself, I can buy a latigo belly for 5 dollars, they are large enough to double the layer for a stiff holster. Add some hot wax and cooled then you have a tuff almost kydex type holster that is light and durable. Latigo leather is the leather used for leather lace shoe laces, it is very tough for how soft it is.

But a redneck wouldn't care if he could buy a better one cheaper. A redneck loves his duct tape. Also sound like something off the "red green show"

I live in a state where we take pride in being rednecks, don't ever remember seeing a duct tape holster. Hell I don't even see anyone OCing a nylon holster. Lotta plastic holsters though.
