Guy figured he could shake down the oldsters after 'shoveling' their drive.
I guess he was not familiar with contract law - no consideration given for services performed in advance.
But looks like granny was willing to pay the dude with some lead.

Really, we have no idea how much the person asked for ... so if he was trying to truly "scam" her is a question.

That's true - Granny could have scammed the guy - "shovel my drive and I'll pay you $50", then when he came to collect she had a gun and told him to beat it….
