Chief Flynn says the officer was patting the suspect down when a struggle ensued. The officer withdrew his wooden baton to defend himself, and Chief Flynn says the suspect took the officer’s baton from him and began striking him in the head.

That’s when the officer withdrew his service weapon — a .40 caliber Smith & Wesson — and fired “several shots” at the man — striking him several times, ultimately causing his death.

What is wrong with people? I don't get what you'd think to accomplish by trying to beat a LEO.

Can someone tell me WHY he had to shoot? Wasn't his taser just as easy to get to as his gun?

maybe. But maybe the taser would have little or no effect or maybe he gets hit with the baton and the barbs miss and then he gets beaten to death and his gun is taken. Maybe he gets beaten then shot with his own gun.

You have what is called the power of hindsight.
