Facebook under fire over 'creepy' secret study (Update)

Facebook secretly manipulated the feelings of 700,000 users to understand "emotional contagion" in a study that prompted anger and forced the social network giant on the defensive. For one week in 2012—and without the explicit consent or knowledge of users—Facebook tampered with the algorithm used to place posts into their news feeds to study how this affected their mood. The researchers wanted to see if the number of positive, or negative, words in messages they read affected whether users then posted positive or negative content in their status updates.

The study, conducted by researchers affiliated with Facebook, Cornell University, and the University of California at San Francisco, appeared in the June 17 edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

LATE! TWT, Facebook outed for conducting creepy mood experiment on users

Privacy advocates are seeing red after finding out that Facebook researchers conducted a secret experiment that tested site users’ reactions and responses to purposely planted and manipulated news content. [ ... ] “I wonder if Facebook KILLED anyone with their emotion manipulation stunt,” privacy activist Lauren Weinstein posted on Twitter, CNN Money reported. “At their scale and with depressed people out there, it’s possible.”

UPDATE 2-UK regulator investigates Facebook over emotions study

"We're aware of this issue and will be speaking to Facebook, as well as liaising with the Irish data protection authority, to learn more about the circumstances," the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) spokesman Greg Jones said in an email.

Jones said it was too early to tell exactly what part of the law Facebook may have infringed. The company's European headquarters is in Ireland.

Facebook Experiments Had Few Limits Data Science Lab Conducted Tests on Users ... WSJ

The experiment was the work of Facebook's Data Science team, a group of about three dozen researchers with unique access to one of the world's richest data troves: the movements, musings and emotions of Facebook's 1.3 billion users.

The little-known group was thrust into the spotlight this week by reports about a 2012 experiment in which the news feeds of nearly 700,000 Facebook users were manipulated to show more positive or negative posts. The study found that users who saw more positive content were more likely to write positive posts, and vice versa.

Facebook Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg said Wednesday during a trip to India that the study was "part of ongoing research companies do to test different products" and was "poorly communicated."

Facebook's secret 'mood experiment' ignored ethical safeguards, says expert

The University at Buffalo's dean of School of Social Work has canceled advertising for her Facebook pages and urged others to considering switching to other social media sites after Facebook carried out an "unethical" mood manipulation experiment on 700,000 subscribers without following proper protections for human subjects involved in psychological research.

"It's entirely possible that people who were already feeling bad, and then felt worse as a result of the experiment, may have been harmed, perhaps through increased depression, anger, anxiety or suicidality," Nancy J. Smyth wrote on her Social Work blog, "Virtual Connections."

I saw this on FB. I commented on the article: "Easily manipulated people are easily manipulated. Whether they're on FB or not . . . ."
