Silencer Question

I've recently purchased a .22 rifle with a threaded barrel. I'd like to see about playing around with attachments, one being a silencer. As a resident of North Carolina, is there anything I need to do, as far as laws, rules or regulations, before I can legally purchase and use a silencer on a .22 rifle. I just want to quiet the gun down a little more. Thanks for any and all information

You have to first get a special tax stamp (basically a license) from the Feds. You have to fill out something like 4 different forms, and submit 2 sets of fingerprint cards, 2 passport photos, a citizenship declaration form, and get signed off by your local police chief. Cost is $200 and it will take about 9 months for them to process your paperwork.

The primary agency you'll need to deal with is federal: The ATF.

Most silencer manufacturers can help you with the paperwork. Note that in addition to the $200 tax stamp from the ATF, the cost of a suppression unit is pretty stiff, often more than your gun cost.

Recent changes in NC law allow hunting with sound suppressors. HB937 deleted GS 112-291.1(c)(1) which had prohibited silencers.

Nightmare's recommendation appears to violate rule #15.:lol: A 2-liter bottle would also require a high mount sight.

Glad you can purchase and use a suppresor in your State. We just had our laws amended, here in Washington, to allow us the same.

A suppressor is an NFA item and OCDO has a subforum for all NFA items, like SBRs and machine guns. Most dealers that handle NFA items will generally guide you through the process. The hardest part is the wait for you stamp to be approved and the paperwork sent back. What thread is your rifle and do you have any others in the same calibre? Pistols?

Why do you think that a homemade suppressor would be illegal?

The BATF can, and has, gone after homemade suppressors. In the paintball industry, we have had a few players run into problems when making their own without getting BATF approval (and paying the $200 fee). It seems they have most of an issue with silencers that can possibly be used for an actual firearm.

There are not just fees on owning/buying one; there is a fee on being able to produce them, as well.

Nightmare's bald statement left me with the impression of advocating to simply make something up and not bother with legalities. If that was not his intent, let him speak up. If an individual wishes to manufacture a silencer, and lives in a state where they are legal (like here in NC), there are still the requirements that the ATF and NC place on such action.
