That's very nice, but is it available for non-LE use?

I don't think so - so I wonder why you quoted my post which specifically asked about "body cam" manufacturers who make their products available to the general public, rather than just LE??

Yes, after they catch up on orders it'll be available but here are 4 pages of body worn cameras including the all popular GoPro.

http://www.officerstore.com/store/search.aspx?keys=camera

I'm not sure what the big deal is. They've had dash cams for years and they aren't always on just like the body cams will off and they don't work when they don't want them to just like the body cams won't work.

Also had 2 or 3 top brass at a VCDL meeting. When they were asked on what grounds they would stop and check a gun carrier, they were a lot of hurrups, coughing and throat clearing, but no good answers.

.

Hahaha .. just like my assessor when I questioned her under oath about how she assesses property ... lots of clearing her throat. But at least I extracted the testimony I wanted and the BAM! adjournment for the assessment review board to consult the "statues".

I'm surprised you let them out of the bldg. w/o answering your question of just flat out told them to answer or leave immediately.

How about spelling out what you feel are the drawbacks?

It's an on/off camera with a strong spring clip that does not hold it straight ahead on anything that is not itself stiff and stable. IOW, not so good on shirt fronts, lapels, or suspenders that have any give in them.

Charge it up and turn it on. Watch out as the back can get hot. There are no adjustments to the camera functions. The wi-fi connection is not great and has several bugs that are sometimes described as "features" and other times described as "we're working on it."

1 1/2 hours (max) of run time with no way to swap out for a fresh battery.

It's expensive - you can get a GoPro with bells and whistles and attachments and spare batteries for about the same price.

OTOH, color and sound qhality are good.

stay safe.

Wow. Clearly NOT "made for the pro" as they claim!

The VieVu[SUP]2[/SUP] is not a "pro" camera. The "pro" cameras, of which I know nothing, seem to be priced for someone who is spending other people's money.

stay safe.

Police body cameras - you tell me how helpful you would find reviewing these videos.

I could go on and on, but I hope you are getting the point.

Maybe if they mounted cameras on top of the cops' head?

stay safe.

Certainly, these examples seem to point out the fact that just "having a body camera" will not completely document what happens ... but I'm not certain what the answer might be. I have seen small cameras that seem to rest on top of the ear and which look forward wherever the officer is looking, but I have not seen any actual video from them. In the heat of adrenalin-reinforced deadly force situations, I suspect that ANY camera is going to be jumping around. Is it the bottom line that ANY audiovisual record is going to be better than NO AV record?

With video that captures nothing that shows the actual threat the officer says s/he was responding to I would wager that a jury would tend to side against the officer.

How many times have we talked about doing a runing commentary for our audio recorders? When the cops walk away to huddle up and make cellphone calls because they think those cannot be FOIA'd and aren't being recorded, keeping that running commentary going gives your side some veracity that the cops' will not have. Also, asking for and repeating the officer's name saves you the problem of trying to decipher the mumbleing.

stay safe.

Cops Wearing Cameras
Color me skeptical. If cops want cameras in order to protect themselves, I couldn’t care less. If the video will be live-streamed to a third party and controlled separate from the police, I’m all for it. This is especially true of SWAT raids, in which the cops may not wear the cameras because of some bogus claim to OPSEC or for the safety of the officers. In other words, it needs to follow certain rules like wearing cameras all of the time, third party control, and mandatory release of the information.

Indeed, who should control the feed and the storage ... and the access?
