Seattle Times discovers that shooting ranges loaded with lead ("worse than Obola")

The graphics and animated videos showing pistols spewing poisonous "Obola" lead all over the place, tells me that this was a heavily funded propaganda effort to shut down shooting ranges.

"Lead poisoning is a major threat at America’s shooting ranges, perpetuated by owners who’ve repeatedly violated laws even after workers have fallen painfully ill."

Thanks Wade's!!! We would all be better off if they just went out of business already.

Workers at my LGS don protective overgarments and wear NIOSH approved masks while performing range cleaning. They are monitored and have never had elevated lead levels.

Notice how they only showcase two ranges here in the state based on issues as old as 8 years ago. All the other range issues are based on out-of-state businesses.

Political hatchet job. Bought and paid for to influence Seattle area voters. The voters that mostly control the whole state.

Shooters are also to blame, as I see it.

I refuse to shoot at indoor ranges with inadequate ventilation (you can generally tell by visiting, if you pay attention, which ranges have well-designed ventilation systems).

For instance, in NoVA there is the NRA range, and then there are a bunch of crappy ranges. I always recommend the NRA range, because it's great. But then I find folks went shooting at one of the "other" ranges. Why?

Shooters should simply not finance businesses with inadequate systems.

How can you call this propaganda when one of the person they interview clearly states that he isn't saying anyone should stop shooting? And nowhere in the story did it mention the need to start shutting down ranges. The gist of the story is clearly on the side of fixing the issues as they stand. Also, this is an issue that is very important to shooters. People that don't shoot are going to skip this story, as it doesn't pertain to them in the slightest, unless they are concerned about the workers' health.

This is something we should all be concerned about. If there was lead residue coating the retail area and drink machine in my range, I would want to know about it, and I'd want them to face heavy fines if they didn't get it fixed.

Inflammatory writing. First you have to make something evil and dangerous. Once that becomes "common knowledge" then you can start banning the "evil and dangerous" things. Same process antis did with rifles. Make the "assault weapon" mean assault rifle look-alikes and modern sporting rifles and call them evil and dangerous (less than 5% shooting deaths), then ban them.

Long term and internal exposure is what is harmful with lead. Someone spending an hour at a range isn't dangerous. In a previous hobby, I've been exposed to enough situations with lead that make me believe these people who are sick are doing something that is idiotic.

Wash your hands and face, keep clothes clean.

I agree... These are problems I care about and will, likewise, only patronize indoor ranges that keep up their facilities. Wades has had some major issues on top of these... price you pay for being one of the most popular ranges on the Eastside... and clearly, this is one of their own making.

However, the expose-level this reaches (was front, above-the-fold on Sunday, in addition to the dramatic/dynamic/interactive web site setup for the story), and just weeks before an election involving dueling initiatives related to firearms... I'm not implying anything, but the timing is rather hilarious.

Champion Arms have had 3 dates of inspection that showed lead issues (training etc) with their workers .. 2011, 2008, 2006 ...

Its not uncommon for shooting ranges in fact. They don't make anything with lead, they just have to follow proper procedures in cleaning and training and engineering to mediate the dangers associated with lead. Its not hard ... their safety officer must be a dunce or they had high turn over of that position. I doubt anyone there is a chemist w/exp with hazardous materials to assist them. They should seek out professionals like that to aid them.

Oh, and there's MORE stuff involving the personnel of Seattle Times. This looks like a potential gold mine for finding nuggets of truth about the "protectors of the public". Each one of these cases is going to have oodles of documents.

Oh, and there's MORE stuff involving the personnel of Seattle Times. This looks like a potential gold mine for finding nuggets of truth about the "protectors of the public". Each one of these cases is going to have oodles of documents.

STOP!

A link to a list would have been more that adequate - no wall of text, considerate of readers

Clearly, you are one right? How come u left?

While I was there the range was in compliance with L&I. Fines were being paid, compliance checks were being completed. Logs were kept on range air pressure. Filters were being replaced weekly. Lead was being removed from the backstop monthly. Now was the range perfect? NO. There were always issues with the ventilation. According to L&I the employees were ONLY allowed to spend 30 mins per 8 hour shift on the range. If you hit the 30 min mark, someone else had to go out and take care of what ever issue would arise.

During the time I was there Oct 2011 to Dec 2012 - I was a asst mgr as well as the IT admin and Safety Officer and about 6 other hats had to be worn.

March 2012 the company lost it's court case with the ATF.
October 2012 the existing General Manager was let go and I moved into his place.
November 30th (?) the ATF came in and yanked all of the 4473's, did a inventory and transferred all the weapons on hand to the existing owner and left with the Federal License.
December 2012 the company was looking at ways to save money, so when a new owner/partner (?) was brought on board, those of us making in excess of $16 an hour were cut loose. Those of us who spoke out, were cut loose.

The current owner verbally promised things to employees and managers and when the time came we got the boot instead. ( I have the digital recording to back up my claims).
