2014-2015 Antis are mobilizing in Arizona

We knew they were coming, and now they have arrived.
My guess is this is just the first wave, meant to foment emotion-driven action based on blatant misinformation (AKA "lies" and "choice omissions"), which will then be followed by the paid Arizona "volunteers" walking around with clipboards and petitions.

The protesters, clad in red Brady Campaign shirts, gathered near Indian School Road and 3rd Avenue in Phoenix, near a local shop that Brady Campaign leaders call a "bad-apple" dealer. "Bad-apple" dealers sell to straw purchasers, or someone who buys a firearm for someone else, a firearm that usually ends up in the hands of a criminal, a board member for Arizonans for Gun Safety said.

Ruben Gallego, the representative-elect for Arizona's 7th Congressional District, also spoke at the event, detailing his plans to work with Washington legislators to create a safer Arizona.

"I want to work with advocates likes the Brady Campaign to make sure that those who get guns are the ones that should have them," Gallego said.

According to statistics from the Brady Campaign, 90 percent of the guns used in crimes across the nation come from only 5 percent of irresponsible dealers.

The protesters called for lawsuits and other legal action to incite change in dealers' business practices. Speakers at the event urged all gun dealers to adhere to the Brady Campaign's code of conduct, which calls for dealers to videotape all gun sales, employ reasonable record-keeping practices and only transfer a firearm to someone who has passed a background check.
I wonder exactly how the bolded portion is meant to work, seeing as stringent record-keeping and running a background check are already practiced by FFL dealer (Federal Firearms License).

Some counter protests with signs pointing out the fact that the checks are unconstitutional and do no good would seem to be in order.

Perhaps time to take the offensive against these ineffective background checks.

Exactly. These idiots don't even seem to know that FFL dealers are already required to perform background checks and complete 4473 forms for all transfers. This is either another example of people opening their mouths and perpetuating ignorance or a case of blatant lies to capture the attention of uninformed people who will take them at face value and believe their nonsense. Furthermore, it wouldn't at all surprise me if a large percentage of dealers who have sold to straw purchasers did so by following all of the rules that are in place. More specifically, someone walks in and is golden concerning the law to purchase a weapon, the FFL dealers conducts the transfer without any knowledge of the intentions of the straw purchaser, and the firearm is then given to the prohibited possessor without the FFL dealer having any knowledge of it. Perhaps we ought to enact federal legislation that requires a session with a fortune teller as part of the FFL transfer process.

Those idiots know, they just don't care about truth & facts. Why? They don't make for good news sound bites.

The frustrating part is that I first saw the report on Telemundo (a Spanish-speaking network; the other prominent one is Univision); on more occasions than I can remember, I've found myself explaining in how many ways the news anchors (on either of these networks) had just lied about firearms statistics, firearms laws, background checks, or permit requirements.

The extent of the indoctrination (in regards to firearms) of the Mexican immigrants I know is a statist's dream. How can people who understand that their government has no qualms about killing its own disarmed citizens in the name of profit still be so staunchly opposed to firearms ownership by anyone who isn't law enforcement or military?

At least the people of the states of Michoacán and Guererro finally understood the most obvious pitfall of remaining disarmed and actually DID SOMETHING ABOUT IT!. Kind of hard to spin it as negative when a few locals are able to do what the "Federales" claimed to be striving for.

Well said Rusty! Sadly many folks here feel the same way: "oh goodness! Only the police should have guns!" Last I checked, that's called a police state. Brings to mind - "Be careful what you ask for, you might just get it!"

The number of straw purchases at otherwise law-abiding FFLs is actually a pretty good argument for why background checks are pointless in the first place and universal background checks even less useful.

    Message from Washington...............

To all Arizona gun owners, Please take the threats from the lefty libtards seriously, treat this as a game you don't
want to lose. Start early and don't stop until you have defeated them. This is like a home invasion of your 2nd A
rights, go after it as such.
Unfortunately I-594 was passed here in Washington, now every one from the AG down to the local PD have no idea
of how to enforce it. Do Not let this happen in Arizona.

As a resident of Washington State and former resident of Arizona, these people mean business. If they cannot get through the legislature, they will use the uneducated and uninformed masses in PHX and Tucson against you via initiative or referendum. Never underestimate the effect a message of "public safety" will have on people who don't know any better.

Thank you Spooler41 and acmariner99. Hopefully we can mobilize the Lawfully-Armed Citizens of AZ and other Freedom-loving individuals; the sad fact is that it is much easier to get people to go Black Friday shopping than it is to get them to become involved in the legislative process.

Agreed. Forget the straw purchases for a moment (which no individual could screen for unless they shadow the potential buyer's every move and communications for weeks). How else can criminals get guns? Stealing. Seems to not require a NICS background check for the criminal, much like a straw purchase, and eliminates the middle man. /sarcasm off.
For instance, a man in Glendale recently had his home burglarized, and the thieves stole several firearms. Backpage link with photos of the scumbags:

Something tells me these guys couldn't care less about permits, waiting periods, or background checks...

AZCDL is focusing on this issue. I believe however that we should start now to counter the notion that background checks are at all effective.

    Thanks for the plug Peter!

AzCDL has a new web page dedicated to the Gun Owner Registration ballot measure that's coming our way.

Bottom line - There are more of "us" than there are of "them," but if Arizona gun owners stay melted into their couches we'll get what Washington just got, what Oregon will soon get, and what Nevada will probably get.
