https://www.yahoo.com/parenting/why-was-a-six-year-old-handcuffed-at-school-104690731302.html

He ran out of school onto a busy, public street and was pursued by three school staff members. The student was secured and returned to the school and placed in a room with a special education teacher, the school counselor and the School Resource Officer (SRO) to protect him from doing harm to himself. After several unsuccessful attempts, his parents were contacted and asked to come immediately to the school. For approximately one hour, the student was scratching, kicking and hitting school personnel and continued to exhibit violent behavior, running into walls, banging his head on tables and placing his health at risk.

Appropriate to handcuff the youngster? Poll it above.

Taser, if beyond the reach of the taser...well...he was a clear and present danger to the motoring public. He could've killed someone.

Forget the question of appropriateness.

Patrick is a special needs student

That means there are federal laws and state regulations governing how he may be restrained. The school had a duty to protect his rights under those laws/regs, regardless of how violently he was acting out.

This incident is just one more example of the police being called to handle what are essentially MH problems, as well as the lack of MH crisis-intervention specialists. It also highlights the fact that the school appears to have a total disregard for the rights of the MH/ED "special needs" student in spite of being required to have a written plan of not only how to provide education but to deal (within legal/regulatory restrictions) with possible/probable behaviors.

The kid in his own right, and the parents in their own right and as guardiens of the kid, stand to become very rich. Sadly, a "settlement" will be agreed to and the school and cops, after denying they did anything wrong, will promise to never do it again.

stay safe.

Inappropriate for all ages. I was taught to 'envelop' the child, pinning his arms with mine and trapping his legs with mine. Better my bloody nose than his.

For approximately one hour, the student was scratching, kicking and hitting school personnel and continued to exhibit violent behavior, running into walls, banging his head on tables and placing his health at risk.

Look Timmy, stop scratching and hitting me...lets discuss this like people..
Timmy! Kicking me in my junk is not discussion.
Ouch, Tim, you scratched my eye....
That's it you SOB !! Its go time!
