The persistent Internet hoax endures, now on Facebook

Here we have the dilemma of using a service provided for free by Facebook, yet we are all keen to protect our privacy. Facebook, a commercial organisation, makes its money from mining our data to offer ever more accurate advertising. Our data is the company's bread and butter, and it can easily manipulate our feeds to make sure that we see something that of interest.

It's sad that Facebook constantly updates settings and such in an effort to make privacy management easier but it seems so few people take the time to care or learn until a fear mongering hoax comes along and then they post a useless post publicly since public is their default post setting and they don't even know it. *sigh* I wish I could just sit all however many million of them down and explain to them how it really works.

Not necessarily. On my personal profile, I don't post public very often and when I do they are political posts, targetting a company. On the other hand, my news pages certainly are supposed to be seen by the masses and I hashtag wherever I can on FB, Twitter and G+.

I know many people who have heavily locked out profiles because they only want to socialise within a narrow circle of people they actually know
