OT- Legislation not OC related but deserves attention

The Imitation Firearm Manufacturing Requirement Act

This would only allow individuals to own or possess a "look alike" firearm if it is painted with white, or bright colors of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, pink, purple or a mixture of those colors.

You can make comments on the bill linked above, look for the green button near the top marked "Comment on this bill"

The problem with America is stupidity.
I'm not saying there should be capital punishment for stupidity, but why don't we just take the safety labels off of everything and let the problem solve itself?

Yeah, that'll work great! Because nobody ever puts those colors on real guns...

I just sent a comment in to oppose the bill:

The biggest problem I see with this bill is that there is a small number of manufacturers of firearms and after-market modifications to firearms that result in real firearms with those colors. A good example of this is the Hello Kitty AR-15, pictures of which are easily locatable using Google image search. While most firearms come in the conventional colors (blued steel, polished chrome, black, etc) there are some that are pink, white, red, orange, green, and so forth Metal finishes are metal finishes. There is no technological reason why a rifle or pistol cannot have a shiny metallic finish in all the colors of the rainbow. This bill appears to make children's toys safer by limiting them to bright colors not often found in firearms, but it fails to do so given the existence of brightly colored firearms. This bill at best would be neutral in preventing police from shooting children for possessing toys, and at worst is a useless burden on industry.

NEW SECTION. Sec. 3. (1) Individuals within the state are only8allowed to own or possess a look-alike or imitation firearm having9the appearance, shape, or configuration of a firearm if the entire10exterior of the look-alike or imitation firearm is a white, bright11red, bright orange, bright yellow, bright green, bright blue, bright12pink, or bright purple color or a mixture of these colors.13(2) Subsection (1) of this section does not apply to a look-alike14or imitation firearm that will be used only in the theatrical, movie,15or television industries that has been approved by the chief counsel16for technology in Washington, D.C.

The "shape" is vague and so is configuration ....

And its goofy, as noted above with the various colors of AR's available.

It is a standard 1950's model Auto Ordinance 1911 chambered in .45acp. The internals have been repalced and tuned up by Peter Dunn (of Detonics fame). My oldest carries it when we are out and about.

A realistic replica would obviously be covered by this bill, but what about airsoft or paintball guns that are not replicas? Or are replicas of things out of sci-fi that don't really exist?

Most paintball guns, while they have brand-specific styling are not replicas or copies of any actual firearm -- if they're a replica of anything, they're a replica of an old tree/cattle marking pistol marketed as a humane alternative to branding.

Why not just go full court the other direction? Make it illegal for a cop to shoot anybody pointing a "look-alike" gun at them because it is really not a dangerous weapon? Then do basically the same for LACs by stripping them of any claim of self defense when it was just a "look-alike".

Of course, going that route will mean ending centuries of both Common Law and case law. But if it saves just one life, amirite?

There is already a law on the books requiring "look-alike" firearms to have a red or orange tip. How about we start charging the survivors with a violation of that law?

But of course we would also need to start charging those who intentionally paint a red or orange tip on a "real" firearm in an attempt to disguise it as a "look-alike".

Brain flash! Write the law so that all "look-alike" firearms must glow, both in the daylight and in the dark. Maybe glow in a specific strobe pattern? Yeah, that'll work!

    stay safe.

how about we just don't shoot people automatically if they have a gun. or a knife. how about we only shoot the people that are committing a crime, not walking down the sidewalk.

and how about we let Darwin Award winners get their award. who are we to want legislation that protects stupid people from doing stupid things?
