Carry while renewing CPL?

Tomorrow I am going in to renew my conceal carry license.

Now that the licensing office is outside of the courthouse building in downtown Tacoma (formaly called the COUNTY/CITY building) is it legal to open/concealed carry in to renew my license?

I say it is, but some friends say not.

Who is right?

Bil

It is perfectly legal to do so as it is not enumerated by RCW 9.41.300 as one of the 5 locations that are legally restricted locations for the carry of firearms. I have been there myself. It is NOT a court or even within the court building. It is NOT a police station or within a police station. It is obviously NOT an airport, jail, or mental health facility. You are free to carry there as long as it's done legally.

Outside of TSA entry point is OK. Thurston county is in the court house, and they have lock boxes. They are good about it.

Thanks for the reply.
It's good to hear from someone who has actually been there and done that.

Don't forget about police stations. It IS legal to carry there. Just stay out of the jail.

I listed airports, jails, and mental health facilities in general terms because these areas are obviously not where the OP will be renewing his CPL so no need to go into detail regarding those locations.

In short, because the OP will not be inside the courthouse which is the original location for obtaining a CPL in Pierce County, and the location is not a police station, there are no laws regarding the carrying of firearms in restricted locations that he needs to be worried about.

I went in at 8:30. Everything went smooth. Only 3 customers besides myself and I do not think anyone even notice.
Renewed with out any issues. Took only 25 min. Very different from 5 years ago. The same process, then, took 2 hours.

When I first bought my CPL at the Snohomish Police station, I missed a sign saying you are not allowed to bring a firearm beyond the front door and I did when I went to buy my CPL and a cop saw me and looked at my 1911 but didn't say anything.

If you were able to just walk in then that sign was placed illegally without regard to the law. Cop didn't say anything because you were the only one that wasn't a criminal present.

Marysville PD has the same sign on their lobby door. I disregarded it, went in, and handed them my application for renewal with check. Had a "detective" come in, stand right behind me, and give me a good look. I turned and did likewise to him. He left and went into the secure area using his key.

The sign really isn't illegal, it just has no legal repercussions as long as you aren't going to any area that isn't open to the public. If a door isn't locked consider what's behind it "open to the public". If you have to go through security, have the door opened for you and you have to be escorted, don't take your firearm with you.

BTW, also went in to pick up my license while carrying and still no issues. For some reason Marysville holds the license for EXACTLY 30 days before they hand it over to you. I asked and was told "Chief's Orders".
