Islands, Churches, and Guns

As usual, a mass shooting like the one in Charleston brings out the gun rights haters who want to cynically use the blood of the victims to grease the skids for their gun control schemes. One hears and reads claim after nonsensical claim that if only we had less gun rights and fewer guns in the United States the victims would still be alive. Reality tells us something very different.

I grew up in Puerto Rico & was there when the massacre you mention happened. Perhaps I don't remember it because I was only 12 at the time. While I don't have much experience with St Croix I have been to nearby St Thomas a number of times over many decades. Each time I came away with the impression that there is a lot of racism there. This appears to be what motivated the Fountain Valley killers.

In the case of the Fountain Valley massacres, my ship, a submarine, did daily operations in The Tongue of The Ocean for a month or so, and we had the run of St. Croix below Queen Street from 1700 until 2400 weekdays and the whole Island on weekends. The limitation to below-Queen Street was due to the natives' racialism.

Another time we were at PR's Roosevelt Roads base and were not allowed off-base for it being National-Shoot-A-Gringo Night in Old SJ. We could hear the gunfire.

Ahhh yes I remember "kill haole day" very well.

Yep, since white folks were the first this word which applied to many foreigners stuck with the white folks.

I never had major issues. I found respect goes a long way. Some claim its because I have color. Yes I keep my Kama'aina current too.
