    Gun control still a fail

These new laws will do stuff all. Coppers are just trying to make out like they are actually doing something.

Aussie state to introduce strict new firearm laws in wake of rising gun violence

MELBOURNE, Aug. 18 (Xinhua) -- The Australian state of Victoria has introduced strict new gun control laws to curb the state's growing illegal firearm problem.

Victoria's Police Minister Wade Noonan released details of the amended policy on Tuesday, saying the government was working closely with the police force to reduce the threat of illegal firearms.

Ah so - now the criminals will have to obey the law....or they may get arrested

From penal colony > free men > being made criminals by the government.

Good people are left defenseless by a parliment that cannot protect them.

Indeed it does seem unusual that a Chinese media reports this, but no other source seems to be beating that drum.

There may be local sources, but a quick glance did not show any recent stories.

If the OP does provide other cites, please keep FUQ (Fair Use Quotes) and links in mind. Do not cut and paste the full article.

I notice that the foreign press - foreign to the source incident - more commonly and accurately report controversial events. A good fraction of my news accumulator's US articles are from primarily the UK, but even Al Jazeera.

I found a local source, but for some reason the Chinese article was first-billed.

    Local source: http://www.heraldsun.com.au/news/bre...-1227488102140

But yeah, it won't do much, if anything. And I agree that it's just more fronting by the police. In fact, there was a shooting near my place earlier tonight. Can't sleep because of the police helicopter which has been circling the area (presumably) looking for the culprits. It's not the first time this year either.

"Also included in the new laws is a responsibility on those found with a firearm to prove the weapon does not belong to them, a reversal of the current onus of proof which puts the burden on police."

That is guilty until proven innocent.

I have a great idea, how about a law that all criminals must turn them selves in to the police after committing a crime.

Woman chased, shot dead at Gold Coast McDonald's

    http://www.brisbanetimes.com.au/quee...10-gjjqkc.html

I wonder if the handgun was legally-owned. Doubtful.

    And earlier in the week.

Ms Brown succumbed to critical head injuries on Wednesday night, a day after Mr Patea allegedly ran her off a road in suburban Molendinar, then bashed her with a metal object while she was trapped in her overturned car.
Apparently she was also on the phone to the police while she was being chased. What a tragedy that she couldn't defend herself.

Victoria's gun crime up 108% Article from October 16th.

Gun crime is on the rise on the streets, with firearms and weapons offences doubling in Victoria in a four year period.

3AW Mornings drilled down some of the latest figures to be released by police and found a 108 per cent increase in gun crime in the state.

GUN CRIME: In 2010-11 there were 6,922 offences compared to 2014/15 when there were 14,404 offences

It comes after a series of incidents across Melbourne in the last few days, all involving guns.

In Lalor overnight a family escaped serious injury after as many as 20 shots were fired from what's believed to be a machine gun in an early morning drive-by shooting.

And from this morning Man dead, child injured after Thomastown drive-by shooting

UPDATE: Homicide detectives believe a high-calibre weapon was used in a targeted shooting in Melbourne's north that claimed the life of a 54-year-old father and seriously injured his four-year-old son.

The bullets went through two rooms before hitting the victims at the property in Thomastown.

Police are also investigating whether the fatal attack was linked to a similar shooting nearby less than two weeks ago.

A 54-year-old father of three was laying down in a bedroom with his wife and young son at 3.45am when shooters opened fire, said the homicide squad's Detective Inspector Mick Hughes.

Bullets penetrated the front of the single story brick house on Darebin Drive in Thomastown, travelled through a front room and into a second room, to strike the man in a bedroom.

On the news they showed some lowlifes (same ethnicity as the victims) laughing while being interviewed by homicide detectives. Fcking scum...

Funny, too, how some of the other recent shootings mentioned in the article never made the news (until now).
